The Madeira School, a boarding and day school for girls in grades 9-12 in McLean, showcases the talents of its students on Nov. 4 and 5. For two evenings, the Performing Arts Department presents "You Can't Take It with You," by Kaufman and Hart, at 7:30 p.m. "Lives and Legacies" will be on display in the art gallery for the same two evenings. Taking Control of Financial Assets. On Thursday, Nov. 4, Oakcrest School in McLean hosts a lecture and discussion by Maureen Bigger, a financial advisor with West Financial Group, on the world of finance and how young people today need to be prepared to take control of their assets to meet their needs and to achieve their goals.Ê

This presentation is for students in their junior and senior years of high school and their parents. The presentation is open to the public, and begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Oakcrest Auditorium. Scouting for Food Drive. On Nov. 6 and 13, Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts in McLean will be participating in the annual "Scouting for Food" collection of non-perishable goods, for distribution to area Food Banks. On the morning of Saturday, Nov. 6, they will be hanging white plastic bags on neighborhood doorknobs, for collection on the morning of Nov. 13.ÊLook for these bags and fill them if possible. McLean Children's Academy hosts an open house for morning and afternoon preschool classes, and for extended day preschool programs, on Thursday, Nov. 11, 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. The open house is for registration for the spring of 2005 with information available for the fall of 2006. Churchill Road Elementary School will hold its Fall Book Fair on Nov. 10-12. A wide selection of the best children's books will be available for the school year and holiday shopping. Parents and supporters are welcome to shop at the library on Wednesday, noon - 4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m., Thursday, 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m., and Friday, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Sign in at the office upon arrival. The Great Falls Art Center holds regular, once-a-week classes in drawing, oil painting, pottery, sculpture and art history for children 6 and older, as well as for teenagers, adults and seniors. GFAC teachers are experienced, professional art educators.

This Fall McLean Project for the Arts is offering a wide variety of art classes for toddlers, children and adults, from Abrakadoodle classes for the little ones, to Junior Studio I offered in cooperation with the Corcoran College of Art and Design for grades 4-6, to adult classes in drawing, painting and open studio with live models. All of McLean Project for the Arts adult classes are offered in cooperation with the Corcoran College of Art and Design. Registration for classes is now open. Long & Foster Real Estate Inc. is once again offering Long & FosterÕs $200,000 Scholarship Program for well-rounded graduating high school seniors entering accredited four-year colleges or universities. The Long & Foster Scholarship Program awards $1,000 to each of 200 worthy recipients for the 2005-2006 academic year. The deadline for applying is March 1, 2005 and the scholarships will be awarded in the beginning of April 2005. The objective of the Long & Foster Scholarship Program is to help students who show potential for lifelong leadership get started in college. A selection committee made up of local members of academia will select the final scholarship winners by April 15, 2005.

Eligible high school seniors must have at least a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale, demonstrate leadership and financial need, indicate positions of leadership, and list all school groups and/or community organizations in which they have served or been involved, and any part-time job held while in school. So that the selection committee can obtain a better picture of each student, applicants are asked to write a short essay on either his or her most significant high school experience or his or her expectations for college.

Applications for the Long & Foster Scholarship Program can be obtained from any of Long & FosterÕs sales offices located throughout the mid-Atlantic region, from high school guidance counselors, or via Long & FosterÕs Web site, www.longandfoster.com/scholarship.
