Army Pvt. Byron S. Philp has deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom to engage in military operations involving U.S. and coalition forces. Operation objectives include liberating the Iraqi people, preserving Iraq as a unified state, keeping its territorial integrity intact, and helping the Iraqi people begin the process of economic and political reconstruction. Active duty, reserve and national guard members from all branches of the U.S. armed forces are participating in the operation. Philp is the son of Elsa G. Philp of Arlington.

The Arlington Community Foundation has announced that Judy Hadden has joined the foundation staff as director of scholarship programs. Hadden is a board member for the Partnership for Children, Youth, and Families and serves as chair of the partnership's youth involvement committee and coordinator for the Teen Network Board. Her long-term commitment to the community has earned her Arlington's Community Hero Award and Arlington Schools' Honored Citizen and School Administrators' Civic Award.

Hadden will manage the Arlington Community Foundation's Scholarship Program, which awards scholarships to college-bound Arlington high school students annually. Thirty different funds — established by individuals, businesses and community organizations — support the scholarship program, with individual scholarships ranging in size from $500 to $5,000. In 2005, the foundation expects to award more than 90 scholarships for a total of more than $150,000. Capt. Alexander Pickands, son of Robert and Kathi Jeffers of Arlington and Martin Pickands of Delmar, N.Y., was admitted to the Virginia State Bar on Nov. 1. A 1991 graduate of Yorktown High School, Pickands was appointed to the Order of the Coif at the College of William & Mary Marshall Wythe School of Law, where he also served as senior articles editor of the W&M Law Review. Pickands and his family will depart Williamsburg for assignment with the 101st Airborne at Fort Campbell, Ky., following training at the U.S. Army JAG School in Charlottesville.
