Is there such thing as an affordable single family home?

Is the affordable single family home in Northern Virginia a fantasy?

In October, the average price of a single family, detached home in Fairfax County topped $600,000, according to the Northern Virginia Association of Realtors.

In Arlington County, the average single family home was more than $730,000 in October.

Many people have looked further west and south, deciding to increase their commutes by an hour or two, instead of paying the high prices in Fairfax and Arlington counties.

The trend to build McMansions and larger homes is also affecting the availability of affordable single family homes. In some neighborhoods where single family homes remain affordable, builders or individual buyers are choosing to buy a small, often old, single family home, tear it down, and build a much bigger home.

Here’s a look at some of the area’s least expensive detached, single family homes on the market as of Dec. 1.
