Speakers Set for 2005 Graduations

* Friday, June 10, The General Education Development (GED) graduation ceremonies will be held at 7 p.m., in the Stone Bridge High School auditorium. Randy Collins, president and CEO of the Loudoun County Chamber of Commerce, will be the commencement speaker. With more than 1,400 members, the Loudoun Chamber is the largest Chamber of Commerce in Northern Virginia. Collins has a bachelor of science degree from Shepherd College and is a graduate of the United States Chamber of Commerce Institute for Organization Management, a six-year program at the University of Georgia. As a self-taught musician, he performs guitar with his bluegrass band ÒFlint Hollow.Ó

* Wednesday, June 15, Monroe Technology Center will hold its graduation ceremony at 7 p.m., in the Heritage High School auditorium. Leesburg Mayor Kristen C. Umstattd will be the speaker. Umstattd was elected to her second term as mayor in 2004. She is a graduate of Yale University with a bachelorÕs degree in Russian and East European Studies and also is a graduate of Yale Law School. Umstattd is a former lieutenant in the Navy Reserve and practices law in Leesburg.

* Friday, June 17, Stone Bridge High School will hold its commencement exercises at 7:30 p.m., in George Mason UniversityÕs Patriot Center. The speaker will be former NASA administrator Sean OÕKeefe, who now serves as chancellor of Louisiana State University. OÕKeefe became LSUÕs seventh chancellor on Feb. 21. He holds a bachelorÕs degree from Loyola University and a masterÕs degree in public administration from Syracuse University. The theme for Stone BridgeÕs all-night graduation party will be ÒTropical Nights.Ó It will be held, from 11:30 p.m. until 5:30 a.m., at the High School. The community-organized baccalaureate will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 12, at Ashburn Presbyterian Church.

* Saturday, June 18, The first commencement exercises for Dominion High School will be held at 10 a.m., in the schoolÕs football stadium. The speaker will be Christopher H. Harvey, first vice president-investments for Smith Barney Citigroup. A motivational speaker noted for his use of technology in the investment community, Harvey taught financial classes at Georgetown University from 1995 to 1998. DominionÕs all-night graduation party, ÒBeach Blast,Ó will be held, from 11 p.m. until 6 a.m., at the Reston YMCA.

* Monday, June 20, Potomac Falls High School will hold its graduation at 10 a.m., in the George Mason University Patriot Center. The commencement speaker will be former Washington Redskin Brig Owens. Owens played safety for the Redskins between 1965 and 1976, intercepting 36 passes. He is now president of Bennett and Owens, a Washington, D.C., firm that represents professional athletes. Owens is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati and Antioch Law School. The all-night graduation party, ÒFantastic VoyageÓ will be held, from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m., at the High School.

* Monday, June 20, Broad Run High School will hold its graduation at 2 p.m., in George Mason UniversityÕs Patriot Center. The commencement speaker will be Karolyn D. Young, systems director of the Advanced Programs Division in the Launch Directorate of The Aerospace Corp. The division is responsible for launch vehicle studies and analysis performed for The National Reconnaissance Office. Young earned bachelorÕs and masterÕs degrees in aerospace engineering, specializing in flight dynamics and control, from the University of Michigan. The theme of Broad RunÕs all-night graduation party is ÒItÕs a Jungle Out There.Ó It will be held, from 11 p.m. until 5 a.m., at the Ashburn Sports Pavilion. A community-organized baccalaureate will be held at 2 p.m. June 12, at Ashburn Presbyterian Church.

* Tuesday, June 21, Park View High School will hold its graduation ceremony at 10 a.m., in George Mason UniversityÕs Patriot Center. The commencement speaker will be Northern Virginia Community College President Robert G. Templin Jr. Templin serves as the fourth president of the college, VirginiaÕs largest institution of higher education and the nationÕs second largest community college. The all-night graduation party will be held, at the High School, from 11 p.m. to 5:30 a.m., with the theme ÒCartoon Connections.Ó
