First Bell

County students return to school on Monday.

The first bell rang on the first day of classes at Walt Whitman High School on Monday morning. Principal Alan Goodwin greeted each student that walked through the school’s front door.

“First bell; you’ve still got time,” he said to a student wearing an “A Clockwork Orange” T-shirt. The student grinned, gave Goodwin the thumbs-up, and walked on into the building for a punctual start to the 2006-07 school year.

At Thomas Wootton High School, Patriot Ambassadors like juniors Kelsea Foecking and Alicia Crowder helped freshmen find their homeroom classes. The friendly Ambassadors, who were decked in red-collared shirts, helped ninth-graders adjust during freshmen orientation and will also volunteer during Back-to-School Night.

First period at Montgomery County’s 26 high schools began at 7:20 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 28. Half an hour later, the 38 county middle school year began, followed by the 130 elementary school an hour afterwards.
