Getting to Know … Vivien Bacon

How many years have you lived in the community?

I moved to Alexandria in 1986 from the District of Columbia to operate my own beauty salon. In 1988, I opened the British Connection on Union Street. Eventually, I opened the British Collection Tea Room and Shop on Royal Street.

What is your educational background?

I finished school in Norfolk, England, and then trained for the hospitality industry.

What is your current job?

I am the chief bottle washer and operator of the British Collection Tea Room and Shop.

What are your achievements?

I am my own boss, which was something I’ve always wanted to do.

What are your interests and hobbies?

I like reading, mostly fiction, and I like working out. I’ve run three marathons, and I’m an animal lover.

What is your favorite local restaurant?

Pita House.

What is your favorite place in the community?

The bike trail near the Potomac River is my favorite place. I go there quite often.

What concerns do you have about the community?

I think Alexandria is becoming overpopulated. With the high price of housing, we’re pushing ordinary working people out. Being an environmentalist, I think we’ve way overbuilt.

What brought you here?

I was living in D.C. and working in Alexandria. It seemed like a good place to open a small business, especially for women.

What are the community's hidden treasures?

King Street Cats, where I volunteer, has got such a good group of people. We’ve all got a common interest, and it truly helps the cats.

What are your personal goals?

I would love to open my own animal sanctuary, where abused, lost or sick animals can find a haven. And if anyone has that kind of financial backing, please contact me.
