A Fourth of July To Remember

McLean celebrates Independence Day in style.

On the morning of the Fourth, a local parade started at Waverly Street. In the evening, the McLean Community Center held its annual Fourth of July celebration on the football field at Langley High School.

Field games, carnival rides, face painting, balloon sculptures and foods were all part of the event. In addition, the U.S. Navy's premier jazz ensemble, the U.S. Navy Commodores performed jazz and popular music, and singer Amanda Roberts — daughter of McLean Community Center Community Events Director Sam Roberts — sang the National Anthem.

In addition, Commander Brett Reistad, the 2005-2006 Commander of the American Legion, Department of Virginia spoke at the event. Reistad is a 25-year Legionnaire and Honorary Life Member of McLean Post 270. American Legionnaires Marvin Quinn and Mary Kingman handed out flags as visitors arrived at Langley.

"We've probably handed out about 800 flags so far," said Quinn. "And that's not counting the two people at the other entrance."

Children across the board said they could not wait for the fireworks display

"This is my second time coming to this," said Conner Forester, 10. "I like the fireworks that go up silently, and then all of a sudden explode."

Emily Olmstead, 9, and Elizabeth Ferry, 11, said that they have been coming to the McLean Community Center Fourth of July celebration for the last two years.

"We love it here," said Elizabeth.

Emily said for her, the best part of the event is definitely the fireworks display.

"It's so good — no matter how tired you are, you can't fall asleep," said Emily.
