Jane Smiley, Pulitzer Prize winner, will accept the F. Scott Fitzgerald Award for Outstanding Achievement in American Literature on Saturday, Oct. 14 at the 11th annual F. Scott Fitzgerald Literary Conference at Montgomery College in Rockville. Smiley has written 10 works of fiction including "A Thousand Acres," which earned her a Pulitzer Prize in 1992.

Deputy State's Attorney John McCarthy is a candidate for Montgomery County State's Attorney. John McCarthy has worked in the State's Attorney's Office for almost 25 years. McCarthy has prosecuted hundreds of major felony cases throughout his career and is widely regarded as one of the top trial attorneys in Maryland. McCarthy is an Associate Professor at Montgomery College where he has taught since 1979 and is a founding member of Montgomery College's Paralegal Studies Program. McCarthy is currently President of the Montgomery County Bar Foundation, which, among other things, provides pro bono services to those unable to pay for legal services. Last year McCarthy served as the President of the Montgomery County Bar Association.
