Fort Hunt Gets Fit

Community shows elementary students ways to stay active.

Fitness is a family affair at Fort Hunt Elementary. Each year just keeps getting better!

With something for everyone, Get Fit night was a high-energy evening attended by over 300 people. From jump-a-thon, hula and basketball free-throw contests to interactive demonstrations and informative booths, the only time folks were seated was to eat a great meal catered by Alexandria Grill Bread & Kebob.

This was an evening packed with wonderful opportunities to get fit. A Jazzercise demo by Peggy Freedland had the kids up and going. Master Walter Davis and his Karate students took the stage, impressing the audience with their powers of strength and concentration, as well as Yoga by Kathy Judd of Pure Prana. There was even a special appearance from Dan Storck and Steve Hunt, board members of the Fairfax County School Board, who were on hand to see and endorse the active lifestyle. Storck spoke with the children about his own experiences as a basketball player and coach throughout his life and stayed to coach those participating in the Free-Throw.

And if that were not enough activity lining the halls and in the gym were the interactive tables featuring the wonderful team at Trader Joes with healthy snack options to try, two swim teams, lacrosse and field hockey camps, personal trainers and training companies. Mount Vernon Athletic Club. Inova Healthsource and Partnership for Healthier Kids were also on hand with great visual displays to discourage tobacco use and sugars in foods. Blood pressure stations, hand-made stress balls by Laura Christenson, occupational therapist; Dr. Melanie Six, chiropractor with foot scans and Pacers running store doing complimentary gait analysis were available as well.

With childhood obesity becoming an epidemic we are proud to be able to bring these local opportunities to our community residents and hope that with each successive year there will be more businesses that endorse the active life and want to share with us. Thank you to all our participants and families for another successful event!
