Lester F. Newborn

Lester F. Newborn, 82, of McLean, died Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2006 at INOVA Mount Vernon Hospital. He was born in Boonesville, Miss. on Jan. 15, 1924 to Manfield Newborn and Mary Elizabeth Turnbo Newborn of Clinton, Tenn., both deceased. At the age of 17, Les joined the U.S. Navy and traveled around the world three times. During his tenure with the Navy, he received many commendations including the National Defense Service Medal, Navy Occupation Service Medal (Europe), Good Conduct Medal (4), American Area, Asiatic-Pacific, World War II Victory, Philippine Liberation, Korean Service, and United Nations Service. After retiring from the Navy in 1963, he moved to Prince Georges County, Md. and became a property manager with Routh Robbins Realtors which was later purchased by Coldwell Banker. He was a devoted supporter of the Republican Party and contributed unselfishly to numerous other charities. He enjoyed playing the lottery and the simple things in life. Lester is survived by his beloved wife of 21 years, Virginia Neal Newborn of McLean; his sister, Clester Mae Smith of Booneville, Miss.; five stepchildren: Roger Neal of Knoxville, Tenn.; Lynn Karlson of Oak Hill; Mark Neal and Zane Neal of McLean; and Kimberly Neal of Centreville. He was also grandfather to Justin Karlson and Joseph Karlson of Oak Hill, Taylor Neal and Ryan Neal of Knoxville, Tenn. His siblings Harold Newborn, Roscoe Newborn, Willadean Davis, Kermit Newborn, Rex Newborn, Nolan Newborn and Mary Alice Beard all predeceased him. Lester was a loving uncle to Lloyd Beard, Rex Newborn, Joyce Duncan, Kay Jackson, Dale Beard, J. T. Beard, Darrell Lee Beard, Wallace Smith, Kathy Livingston, and other nephews and nieces.

Funeral services will be held at Fort Myer Old Post Chapel on Monday, Nov. 13, at 3 p.m. Family and friends are asked to meet at the chapel at 2:30 p.m. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Capital Hospice.
