Scary Summer Strings

Spring Hill Elementary School orchestra teacher Ruth Donahue spices up her Summer Strings camp by encouraging students to come to rehearsal dressed as monsters or whatever else might take their fancy, depending on the day. To keep things interesting, Donahue has “Messy Mondays,” “Wacky Wednesdays” and “Freaky Fridays.” The rising fifth, sixth and seventh grade campers showed up to last week’s Freaky Friday rehearsal in colorful witch costumes, full Halloween monster face masks and a wide variety of creative head gear. Donahue joined in the fun and conducted rehearsal in a black and white witch wig and oversized green rubber hand. The Summer Strings campers, who mainly hail from McLean and Great Falls, come from seven different area schools and rehearse three times a week at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in McLean. Donahue has been leading the camp since 1984.
