Elementaries Prepare to Welcome Students

Arcola Elementary

Arcola Elementary will open this fall. The new school will serve approximately 515 students. Principal Clark Bowers has been preparing for the first day of school and assembling the school staff.

"You have to make sure the people on the staff share a vision, one of caring about kids, parents and colleagues," he said.

Fifth-graders will be taking a field trip to Hemlock Overlook Sept. 10. The outdoor program focuses on teamwork. The $35 dollar field trip fee is due at the open house Aug. 31.

The open house for students in grades first-fifth is Aug. 31, from 10:30 a.m.-12 p.m.

Kindergarten orientation for students and parents is Aug. 30, at 10:30 a.m. for morning kindergarten and 11:30 a.m. for the afternoon classes.

This year Hillside Elementary will mark its 10th anniversary. Principal Mary Green says the school has many programs planned, including a family picnic the PTO will host after the open house for students and their families on Aug. 31.

There have been a few staff changes in the front office and Green says there is a new music teacher. Students will receive their class assignments in the mail.

Back-to-school night for parents of morning kindergarten and first- and second-grade students is Sept. 18. Parents of afternoon kindergarten, third-, fourth- and fifth-grade students will have their back to school night on Sept. 20.

Hutchison Farm will welcome students back with a day of activities on Aug. 30. Students in grades one through five are invited to get a sneak preview of their classroom from 9-10 a.m.

Morning kindergarten students will meet their teachers from 10-11 a.m. and afternoon kindergarten students are invited to visit their classroom from 11 a.m.-12 p.m.

Legacy Elementary begins its third year this fall. The school will join about 30 other Loudoun County schools as it implements the Steps to Literacy program for kindergarten, first-, second- and third-grade students.

"The teachers have received training and this literacy program should be very successful," Principal Robert Duckworth said.

Duckworth says they have many programs planned throughout the year around their theme "SOL: Superheroes of Learning."

The PTA will continue to offer many family-oriented events, including a fall cook out and a movie night.

Students are invited to meet their teachers Aug. 31, from 10-11 a.m. Back-to-school night is Aug. 30. Parents of students in prekindergarten, kindergarten, first- and second-grades will meet at 6:45 p.m. Parents of students in grades three, four and five will meet at 7:15 p.m.

Little River Elementary will begin the new school year with "just over 1,000 students," Principal Joyce Hardcastle said. She says a few classes have been added. There will be nine classes in the first grade.

The theme for this year is "Spying Good Learning" and students can look forward to many different activities.

"We are very eager for our students to have fun and learn," Hardcastle said. The PTA has purchased two smart boards for the school. The PTA is also sponsoring an ice cream social for students and their parents after the open house on Aug. 31.

Back-to-school night is Aug. 30, at 6 p.m., for parents of students in morning kindergarten and grades one and two. It is at 7:15 p.m. for parents of students in afternoon kindergarten and grades three, four and five.

Mill Run is preparing to welcome more than 1,000 students back to school. Principal Paul Vickers says there has been very little staff turnover but there are new teachers in each grade, including three new first-grade teachers.

Teachers are being trained and will introduce the Steps to Literacy program to students in kindergarten, first, second and third grade.

Students may notice some touchups around the school. The parking lot has been resurfaced and many classrooms have a fresh coat of paint. The PTO and the school are working together to build an outdoor instructional classroom that will feature indigenous plants and an amphitheater. Vickers says they will begin work this fall "so the students can play a part in the project."

Classroom assignments will be posted in front of the school on Aug. 27, at 1 p.m. On Aug. 30, there will be a parent orientation for kindergarten from 9:30-10:45 a.m. Students in all grades are invited to meet their teacher from 1-2:30 p.m. with a picnic to follow. Back-to-school night for parents on students in grades one through five will be that evening at 6:30 p.m.

Pinebrook will continue its team approach this year recognizing the contributions of teachers, parents and students.

An open house for students will be held Aug 31. Morning kindergarten will attend from 9:30-10:30 a.m. and afternoon kindergarten will be from 12-1 p.m. Pinebrook will be open for students to meet their teachers from 1:30-3 p.m.

Back-to-school night for parents is Sept. 6, from 6-6:45 p.m., for morning kindergarten and grades one through five and from 7:15-8 p.m. for afternoon kindergarten and grades one through five.

Rosa Lee Carter will open its doors to students in September with the motto "Embracing the Legacy: Courage, perseverance, excellence." The dedication ceremony for the new school will be held Oct. 4, at 3 p.m.
