Neighbors: Rosemont Aug. 30-Sept. 4

Attention

Rosemont is attention-getting, but not for the right reasons. One of our neighbors on the upper end of Walnut was assaulted as she exited her car at 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 7, in the privacy of her own driveway. Not only did the assailant throw her to the ground, he put a knife to her throat. Fortunately her screams were heard, and when he saw a person at the window calling out, he quickly left. The police are covering the neighborhood with fliers describing a dark-complected black male of muscular/solid build, possibly 5 feet 11 inches to 6 feet in height with a round or oval face and wearing dark clothing. Should anyone have knowledge of this offense, they are asked to call Det. T. Buckley at 703-838-4897, or 703-838-4711.

What does this mean to us?

It is that we should train ourselves to be more aware of our surroundings at all times; and when hearing screams, do investigate! It is not necessarily joyful teenagers walking along the street and having fun (as two neighbors surmised, and dismissed the noise). Also, make sure to replace those burned out light bulbs, and make sure that the motion detector really is working. News Channels 7 and 9 were here to report and alert neighbors to be on watch — at all times.

Now the porches of Maple Street fairly glow with brightness in order to ward off any more such occurrences. Great neighborhood cohesiveness — keep them glowing!

In other news:

Yes, Rosemont did have its annual July 4th celebration. Babies were beautiful, the weather was gorgeous, the bike parade colorful and patriotic, the games exhilarating, and the chefs were extremely appreciated. Del Pepper came to say hello, Mayor Euille dropped by, F.J. Pepper was our music wizard, Sheriff Dana Lawhorne enlisted many good friends to help set everything up, and Owen Malone gave the Gettysburg Address.

Thanks go to Yates Auto Service, to Mortgage Lender Graham Setlief, to David Paik, and to Realtor Christine Garner, all of whom contributed funds to help defray vendor costs. Their good will is much appreciated in the knowledge that we don't have to empty the treasury for this event. And since yours truly, Judy Miller, has been organizing this event for over 20 years, it is felt that I need a committee. I wholeheartedly agree. I really do appreciate those who return my calls, and look forward to helping us out — no matter what the age. You can leave word with me at any time via e-mail at RltrMiller@aol.com or at Judy.Miller@Prudential Carruthers.com.
