Permit Changes for Labor Site

Herndon's Planning Commission approved a modified special exception permit for the town's day labor site on July 2 that allows for both the current operator to continue operations and a possible new operator in the future.

The recommendation to approve the modified permit was made to Herndon's Town Council in advance of the Herndon Official Workers Center permit expiration in September. It was passed by a vote of 5-1 with Planning Commission member Dave Swan dissenting and Planning Commission member Paul LeReche not present.

If approved, the permit allows Project Hope & Harmony or another operator to continue managing the Herndon Official Workers Center at the site for one year, according to town staff.

In June, the Town of Herndon received two proposals from individuals looking to set up an alternative day labor site that would check for worker's legal residency status, an action that Project Hope & Harmony does not take.

The original special exception permit for the Herndon Official Workers Center was approved by the former Town Council in August 2005.

Meeting Addresses Future Parks

Town of Herndon staff and Planning Commission members will host a public meeting July 17 to discuss the town's comprehensive parks and recreation plan that will last until 2030.

The public hearing is part of a series of meetings hosted by town staff and officials to involve citizens in the process to draft the town's new comprehensive development plan. The plan will work as a guideline for future officials and staff members as they make decisions dealing with future town development.

Staff members are looking to draft a preliminary version of the comprehensive plan by September for review by Herndon's Planning Commission before moving on to Herndon's Town Council for approval in December.

The meeting will take place at 7 p.m. in the Herndon Council Chambers located at 765 Lynn St.

Home Ownership Seminar

The Herndon Neighborhood Resource Center will team up with local broker National Realty to offer a free home ownership seminar for area residents on July 12.

The two-hour seminar will focus on ways to prevent foreclosure, securing "short sales" and taking advantage of a heavy buyer's market, according to a release from the Neighborhood Resource Center.

The seminar will take place at the Herndon Neighborhood Resource Center at 1086 Elden St. beginning at 6:30 p.m.
