Amelio Is Legacy Laureate at U-Pitt.

Gary A. Amelio of Chantilly has been named a 2007 Legacy Laureate by the University of Pittsburgh for his accomplishments as an alumnus of the university.

Amelio attended the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg from 1974-76 and earned his bachelor of arts degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Arts and Sciences in 1978. He earned his Juris Doctor degree from Pitt’s School of Law in 1981. Amelio has a wife, Kim, and a daughter, Nicole.

He is a highly regarded leader in the fields of employee benefits, investment executive compensation and asset management who served as chief executive officer of the Federal Retirement Thrift Investment Board. While there, he directed the $125 billion United States federal employee Thrift Savings Plan, which is the largest defined contribution plan in the world and provides benefits to more than 3 million federal employees, including members of the armed forces, postal service, and the executive, legislative and judicial branches. He currently serves as president of retirement services for ULLICO Inc., a Washington, D.C.-based holding company of the Union Labor Life Insurance Company that serves the benefit needs for American labor union workers.

Amelio has provided technical counsel to senior White House and Cabinet officials and members of Congress. He has been a speaker for a broad range of governmental and professional organizations and has been a faculty member in undergraduate studies and continuing education programs in several Pennsylvania colleges and universities.

He has served on the Advisory Board at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg, the board of directors of the Golden Panthers, and the executive committee of the Pitt Alumni Association. He currently serves on the Leadership Council of the American Diabetes Association and on the development committee of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

He has received numerous honors and awards, including the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg Alumnus of Distinction, Federal Computer Week’s Federal 100 Top Executives, the World Wide Employee Benefits Association Innovation in Benefits Award, the Defined Contribution News Plan Sponsor of the Year (nominee) and the Plan Sponsor Magazine Plan Sponsor of the Year.
