ExtravaCATza is back for the month of July at the Fairfax County Animal Shelter. The fanCATstic cat and kitten adoption event will spotlight Fairfax County’s felines at the shelter located at 4500 West Ox Road in Fairfax.
Families interested in adopting a cat or kitten are encouraged to drop by the shelter throughout the month of July to meet the animals that are available and looking for a loving new home. The first 100 cats adopted from the shelter during the month of July will receive a free spay or neuter; a potential savings of between $70 and $115 for adopters.
As part of the ExtravaCATza, the shelter is partnering with area animal rescue organizations that will bring their cats and kittens available for adoption, to the shelter on Sundays in July. The adoption process and corresponding fees vary by group.
The shelter will also be open its normal adoption hours throughout the month: Tuesdays – Fridays, 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The special Sunday adoption hours will be from 12 p.m. – 4 p.m. on July 6, 13, 20 and 27.

Centreville Regional Library is seeking volunteers to put their green thumbs to good use. A motivated person who can offer suggestions on how to improve the landscaping is needed to start and run a team of gardening volunteers. Work hours are flexible. Help others improve their English! Do one-on-one tutoring or co-lead conversation groups for people who want to practice and improve their English skills. The greatest need is for evening and weekend sessions. Sully Historic Site hosts its annual World War II Living History Weekend on Saturday, July 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, July 13 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Meet over 100 re-enactors representing both Axis and Allied troops, and get an up-close look at what life was like for soldiers and civilians throughout the war. Interpreters will have authentic uniforms, equipment, weapons and vehicles, including a halftrack tank, on display in their camps.
On Saturday at noon and 2 p.m. enjoy period music by TreVoché, performing music reminiscent of the Andrews Sisters. Tour the 1794 home of Richard Bland Lee and learn about home life during World War II at Sully and in Fairfax County. Children can participate in games and make a period craft to take home. American Legion Post 177 will be providing food and drink for purchase.

The Fairfax County Animal Shelter will change the time for each of its remaining 2008 low-cost rabies clinics. The clinics will now be held from 2–4 p.m. at the animal shelter at 4500 West Ox Road, Fairfax. Dates for the 2008 clinics are: Sunday, July 13; Sunday, Sept. 14; Sunday, Nov. 16. The cost for rabies shots at the clinic is $10. The clinic is held for dogs, cats and ferrets. All dogs should be on leashes and all cats and ferrets in carriers.
Fairfax County 2008 dog licenses will be sold separately at the clinic and cost $5 for altered dogs and $10 for unaltered dogs (bring proof of your pet's spay or neuter).
