New Pastor at the Good Shepherd. The Church of the Good Shepherd, a United Methodist church in Vienna, will welcome its new pastor Mark Burgess with a reception on Sunday, July 13, following its 10 a.m. worship service.

The Rev. Burgess, whose appointment to the church begins July 1, will preach his first service on July 6. The church, located at 2351 Hunter Mill Rd. in Vienna, has a summer worship schedule with a single 10 a.m. service through

Aug. 31.

The Rev. Burgess comes to Good Shepherd from Benn’s United Methodist Church in Smithfield, where he has served since 2001. A graduate of Wesley Theological Seminary, he has served as pastor at churches in Hampton, Altavista, Fredericksburg, Waynesboro and Winchester. His wife, Ruth, has been appointed pastor at Bruen Chapel United Methodist Church in Fairfax. The Church of the Good Shepherd celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2007. Patriotic music. On June 29 at 5 p.m., McLean Presbyterian Church will host The Dominion Brass in a performance of patriotic music, at 1020 Balls Hill Rd. in McLean. This ensemble

of professional musicians, many of whom are music educators from the D.C. area, comes together to bring praise to God through music in concerts, worship and other events. Since it’s founding in 2002, the group has raised over $20,000 for various ministries. Admission is free and a freewill offering will be received to further the ministry of Dominion Brass.

Musical selections will include works by Copeland, Ives and Sousa with the McLean Presbyterian Choir joining the band to close the concert with America, the Beautiful and Battle Hymn. Contact mcleanpres.org 703.821-0800 for more information.

5 K Walk/Run. Great Falls Ecumenical Churches are hosting a 5 K Walk/Run July 4th at 7:30 am. Meet at the Great Falls Freedom Memorial next to the Great Falls Library. This is a fun, no cost event, for the whole family. For more information, contact Pastor Gysan at 703-759-6068.

Churches Connected for Community Care will be hosting the first annual Family Wellness and Spiritual Revival Forum on Saturday, July 26, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. The forum will address such issues as Spiritual Wellness, Physical Wellness, Economic Wellness, Wholeness of Life Family Ministry, Spiritual Revival for the Soul, and Pillars of Christian Life. Vienna Christian Healing Rooms: a place to receive healing. Every Saturday, 1-5 p.m., at 8200 Bell Lane, a team of Christians is available to pray for anyone requesting prayer. The Baha’i community of McLean holds a weekly fireside, a meeting of discussion, devotion and fellowship, at 7500 Box Elder Court in McLean, beginning at 8 p.m. every Friday. English classes. McLean Baptist Church is offering free conversational English classes on Mondays. Classes include beginning, intermediate and advanced levels. Advanced electives are Literature, U.S. Government, World Religions, and current events. There is no cost for the class or registration, however students must buy their own books. St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church, located at 1830 Kirby Road in McLean, invites all to come for the Third Sunday Service every month at 10:15 a.m. This service allows the children to play active roles during the service, particularly in the music and as greeters and ushers. The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Fairfax, at 2709 Hunter Mill Road, Oakton, has music programs for the congregation. The chorale, a 60-voice adult choir, welcomes new members at any time and rehearses Thursdays, 7:15-9:15 p.m. The Circle of Music Makers meets the first Monday of the month and welcomes those who can share a vocal or instrumental solo; everyone who comes is expected to perform. A program using music, drumming, movement, song and prayer seeks to bring communities together as part of everyday life. The dances are cross-cultural using sacred phrases, chants, music and movements from many faith traditions. These efforts aim to promote peace and integration within individuals and groups. There are no performers or audience, and no experience is necessary. Donations are accepted. A Centering Prayer Group meets Fridays, 9:30-10:30 a.m. at Andrew Chapel United Methodist Church, 1301 Trap Road, Vienna.
