Westfield High will hold its annual Ethics Day on Monday, Nov. 24 starting at 8 a.m. at the Westfields Marriott Conference Center. The Westfields Marriott will partner with the Dulles Regional Chamber of Commerce and other local businesses. Approximately 730 sophomores will interact with 50 senior class leaders to learn about the importance of ethical decision making during this critical period of adolescence.

Registration begins Nov. 17 for the spring 2009 semester at Northern Virginia Community. People who register early may defer paying tuition until Dec. 19. Anyone who registers after Dec. 19 must pay tuition before 5 p.m. on the next business day. Classes in the 16-week semester begin Jan. 12. NOVA also offers two eight-week sessions which start Jan. 12 and March 16. The eight-week sessions cover the same material and award the same credits as 16-week courses. The Chantilly Band Department will hold its first formal concert of the year on Tuesday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. at the school auditorium. The cost is $4 per person. The performance will feature our Concert, Workshop Jazz, Percussion Ensemble, Chantilly Jazz, and Symphonic Winds bands.

Hinson Peters of Chantilly, a junior at Paul VI Catholic High School, recently won third place in the 2008 Voice of Democracy speech contest. The theme of this year's contest was "Service and Sacrifice by America's veterans benefits today's youth by..."

Jamal Crowelle of Centreville, a student at Emory & Henry College, has advanced to the final auditions of the Southeast Theatre Conference acting competition, which will be held in March. Among the schools participating in a state competition sponsored by the Virginia Theatre Association (VTA) were the University of Virginia, Virginia Tech, Virginia Commonwealth University, William and Mary College, as well as a large number of smaller colleges and universities.

The CVHS Wrestling and Football programs are co-sponsoring the 4thAnnual Basket Bingo on Sunday, Nov. 16 from 1:15-4:30 p.m. in the cafeteria. Doors open at 12:30 p.m. with the Bingo games starting at 1:15 p.m. Tickets are $15 each. All proceeds will go the Centreville Wrestling and Football programs.

Westfield High School Athletic Booster Club will be holding its Annual Holiday Shopping Hours on Thursday, Nov. 20 from 6-9 p.m. at the Indoor Concession Stand at Westfield. There will be all kinds of Westfield High Merchandise available for purchase.

Virginia Run Elementary School enjoyed performances of Dr. Albert Erg Presents… The Notion of Motion on Thursday, Oct. 23. Using numerous demonstrations and his unique props and presentation style, Dr. Erg taught the students the concepts of inertia, action and reaction, mass, force and acceleration.

The Centreville Wildcat Band is conducting its annual citrus sale. A full box contains 50 to 56 oranges or 30-35 grapefruit and sells for $30. A half box contains 25 to 28 oranges or 15 to 20 grapefruit and sells for $20. Orders are being taken through Nov. 25. Delivery date is Dec. 5. Fairfax County Public Schools is searching for teachers, counselors, speech pathologists, occupational and physical therapists, social workers, and psychologists for the 2009-10 school year. A Secondary School Instructional Job Fair will be held on Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009, (snow date Jan. 31) and an Elementary School Instructional Job Fair on Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009, (snow date Feb. 28), at Oakton High School. Molly Bridenbaugh of Chantilly will participate in the International Communications and Negotiations Simulation as part of a political science class at Lynchburg College. She’s a junior International Relations major.

Andrew Barstow of Centreville, a senior majoring in aerospace engineering, is the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets Alpha Company Executive Officer for the 2008-09 academic year.

Junior and senior corps of cadets interview for leadership positions in the spring semester and serve in their assigned position for the fall or spring semester of the following year. Cadet officers lead between 30 and 200 cadets.

Samantha Luffy of Centreville was selected to play a performer for University of Mary Washington production of "Elegies: A Song Cycle." Luffy is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tim Luffy of Centreville and is a 2007 graduate of Westfield High School. Performances were held Sept. 25 through Oct. 5 in Klein Theatre.

Alexis Reyes of Centreville recently completed a training program at NOVA’s Manassas Campus. Working with Tire Kingdom, the Manassas Campus automotive program created a special, five-week course to teach basic automotive skills and provide employment opportunities.

Applications for Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology are now available in all public middle schools and private schools. At each middle school, a designated counselor has applications, brochures, and newsletters about the admissions process. If a student cannot obtain an application from the middle school or private school, or if the student is home schooled, call the admissions office for an application at 703-876-5265. Clifton Children's Academy is offering a new Accelerated Junior Kindergarten program. It is available to those children who may have just missed the cut-off date for public kindergarten, those children who may not have been quite ready to begin kindergarten this fall, or those children who are excelling on the academic front and are looking for even greater challenges. The program consists of language arts, early math, social studies and science, as well as foreign language and visual arts. The school is located on Compton Road in Centreville.
