Yorktown Volleyball Suffers Minor Defeat in Victory

The Yorktown volleyball team improved to 6-0 in National District play with a 3-1 (22-25, 25-19, 25-11, 25-14) win at Stuart on Monday.

While the Patriots have not lost a district match, their game one loss to the Raiders was Yorktown’s first district game defeat since 2007.

"We were kind of hoping to shut out all the teams in our district," Yorktown senior setter Libby Kane said. "We came out a little bit weak and then we got better as the [match] went on."

After dropping game one, 25-22, Yorktown took control, holding Stuart to less than 20 points in each of the final three games, and less than 15 in the final two.

Elyse Bush finished with a team-high 19 kills and 15 digs for Yorktown. Ashley Rock tallied 18 kills, had no hitting errors and posted a .692 hitting percentage. Kane dished out 49 assists. Katie Rock and Courtney Duran each had six kills.

While Yorktown is now 12-3, head coach Brittanie Behar wants to see more energy from the Patriots.

"What we’re struggling with right now is our excitement level," she said. "We look the same whether we’re playing great or whether we’re playing poorly. I think that’s going to be tough as we get into the postseason because teams are into it.

"… Ashley tonight: tons of kills. We need to get excited about that — live it up — and we’re struggling with that a little bit. It’s something that we’ve been focusing on and hopefully we’re going to continue to improve on."

Yorktown hosts Stone Bridge at 7:15 p.m. today.
