— The Rev. Charles F. Brock, most recently associate rector at St. Barnabas’ Episcopal Church in Annandale, has accepted a call to be rector of St. James’ Episcopal Church, Mount Vernon, beginning Sept. 2.

“Charles Brock earned a M. Divinity from Virginia Theological Seminary, a BA at Haverford College and has studied at M.I.T. He complemented this education with cross cultural studies at Maryknoll Institute in Nairobi and with several years of additional study in ministry and prayer,” said Robert (Bob) Fitz, St. James’ senior warden. Brock’s seminarian assignments included ministry at St. John’s Church in Beltsville, St. Patrick’s in Falls Church and Washington Hospital Center where he served as chaplain. He is a member of the executive board of the Diocese of Virginia.

Prior to entering the ministry, Brock was an independent consultant, developing educational computer software for K-12 education. He assisted educators to develop creative programs, and led technical teams to implement their visions, managing all aspects of bringing projects from ideas to fruition.

“Concurrent with our enthusiasm about receiving Rev. Brock to be our rector, we are pleased that St. James’ Sunday School will resume fall activities in September,” Fitz added. Registration for classes will be Sunday, Sept. 9, beginning at 10 a.m. Children may also be registered for Sunday School by calling St. James’ office during the week at 703-780-3081. Classes will begin on Sunday, Sept. 16.

The church Nursery will be open and staffed every Sunday from 9 a.m. to noon. Children four years old and younger are invited to use the Nursery, where they can enjoy Bible stories and related activities.

Sunday services and programs include:

  • 8 a.m. Holy Eucharist, Rite I

  • 9 a.m. Nursery is staffed until noon (for four-year-olds and younger)

  • 9:15 a.m. Adult Forum

  • 10 a.m. Sunday School (for children five and older)

  • 10:15 a.m. Holy Eucharist with Music, Rite II.

The Fall Picnic will be on Sunday, Sept. 9 in the church gardens, following the 10:15 am service.

St. James’ Annual Art and Craft Fair will be held on Saturday, Sept. 15 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., rain or shine.

“St. James’ is pleased to welcome Charles, his wife Heidi and their young son to our parish and the Mt. Vernon community,” said Fitz. “We invite our Mount Vernon friends and neighbors, as well as those from surrounding areas, to our services and activities and also to join us in carrying out our mission of being the face of Christ to others.”
