Promoting Recycling in Herndon Neighborhoods

— The Four Seasons and Hunters Creek neighborhoods, both located in the Town of Herndon, will square off in a “Battle of the Bottles” to determine which neighborhood increases its percentage of recycled material throughout the month of July.

The friendly competition, produced by the Herndon Environmental Network (HEN) in partnership with the Town of Herndon and Meadows Farms Nurseries, is designed to increase awareness of the value of recycling as well as participation in the town’s recycling program. The town’s Department of Public Works (DPW) will weigh recycled materials collected from each neighborhood to determine which has a higher percentage increase in the volume of materials. Volunteers from HEN are distributing fliers to residents in both neighborhoods, as well as through their respective homeowners’ associations, to alert them to the competition.

The neighborhood that measures the greatest percentage increase in recyclables will receive a $500 gift card from Meadows Farms Nurseries that will go toward purchasing trees, plants and flowers for neighborhood common areas.

“While only one neighborhood will be declared the ‘Battle of the Bottles’ winner, in reality both participating neighborhoods win as they both contribute to a cleaner, greener community environment,” said Mayor Lisa Merkel.

The Herndon Environmental Network was founded in 2011 by a group of Herndon-area residents concerned about environmental issues globally and in the community. Their mission is to improve the environment through education, initiatives and advocacy in the greater Herndon area. Find out more about HEN online at www.herndonenvironment.com.
