Back from Atlanta with More Than 25 Awards

The Whitman Wildcat Music Ensemble

At 6 a.m., the morning of April 24, more than 120 students, 19 chaperones, three teachers, and one administrator, arrived at Walt Whitman Middle School to take three buses and head to Atlanta to participate in the 2014 Music Showcase Festival.

The teachers are Sara Prince (Chorus), Kelley Williams (Orchestra) and Barbara Dobberstein (Band).

When it was over, the Whitman Music Ensembles were awarded more than 25 awards. Band Director Barbara Dobberstein said this was the first time in her years of teaching that her students had received a perfect score.

Overall Outstanding Instrumental Performance

  • Sinfonia Orchestra

  • Beginning Percussion Ensemble

  • Mixed Chorus

Superior Ratings with a Gold Medal:

  • Symphonic Band

  • Wind Ensemble (won an additional trophy for receiving a perfect score from one of the judges)

  • Beginning Percussion Ensemble

  • Sinfonia Orchestra

  • Mixed Chorus

  • 8th Grade Women’s Chorus

  • Men’s Chorus

Outstanding Sections:

  • Clarinets from Wind Ensemble

  • Sopranos from Mixed Choir

  • Soprano 1s from Women’s Choir

  • Baritones from Men’s Choir

  • Double Basses from Sinfonia Orchestra

Soloist Awards:

  • Soprano Soloist: Rosemarie Spollen

  • Alto Soloist: Ra’ina Naputi

  • Baritone Soloist: Ricky Harris

  • Baritone Trio: Naclareo Peirce-Baldon, Denilson Zapata, and Walker Zaman
