Prescription Drug Take Back Initiative

On Saturday, April 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Vienna Police Department will again participate in a one-day initiative to remove potentially dangerous controlled substances from area homes.

There will be a collection site for old, expired, unused, or unwanted medications. Prescription medications, controlled or non-controlled substances, and over the counter drugs may be turned in anonymously at the collection point inside the Vienna Police Department located at 215

Center St., South, Vienna.

Participants may dispose of medication in its original container or by removing it and disposing of it directly into the collection box.

If an original container is used the individual should consider removing any identifying information from the prescription label.

Liquid products should remain sealed in their original container to prevent leakage.

Intravenous solutions, injectables, and syringes will not be accepted due to associated hazards.

Commercial businesses, pharmacies or other medical facilities may not use this as a means to discard expired medications or medical waste.

Incidents

Fraud - 500 Block Glyndon Street, NE. Between Jan. 1, 2009 at midnight and April 4, 2016 at 7:41 p.m. A resident advised a utility account had been fraudulently opened using his identity in Oklahoma.

Fraud - 600 Block Tazewell Road, NW. Between Oct. 2, 2012 at noon and Aug. 17, 2013 at noon. A resident reported that he received a letter from a debt collection agency regarding a past due account. The account was opened in New England through Verizon by an unknown person using the resident’s identity. This case is being investigated.

Petit Larceny - Vienna Jewelry, 320 Maple Ave., East. Between March 13 at noon and April 2 at 3:21 p.m. An employee reported that someone had removed the bottom half of the downspouts from the building.

Forgery - Staats Developers, 120 Church St., NE Between March 21 at noon and April 1 at 12:08 p.m. An employer was notified by his bank of company checks that were being forged and cashed.

Trespassing - 400 Block Colin Lane, NW. April 1, 8:51 a.m. An officer responded to a report that a man, who had previously been trespassed from the home, had returned for some of his belongings. The residents permitted the man back into the house to retrieve his belongings. He was then informed again that he was no longer permitted on the property.

ArrestHit and Run - Taco Bell, 362 Maple Ave., East. April, 1 9:53 p.m. A citizen reported witnessing a vehicle strike a parked car in the parking lot, then leave the area. The citizen was able to provide a tag number for the vehicle and a description of the occupants. An officer was able to make contact with the vehicle owner who advised her son drives the vehicle and she would have him bring the vehicle to the Vienna Police Station. The driver later arrived at the station and advised he had struck the parked vehicle and drove off. The officer obtained two warrants for the driver. The warrants were served on April 7. The driver, an 18-year-old man from Prichard Court in Dunn Loring, was released on his signature charging Hit and Run and Violation of a Restricted License.

Juvenile - Chipotle, 227 Maple Ave., East. April 2, 10:33 p.m. An officer observed a male approach some juveniles who were in the parking lot of Chipotle. He then watched as the man continued walking through the various parking lots then proceeded to a park bench in the Park Terrace Condominiums Complex. Upon his interaction with the male, the officer found he was a juvenile. He explained to the officer that he lives with his grandfather and has permission to be out.The officer contacted his grandfather who agreed to pick up his grandson.

ArrestDriving While Intoxicated and Hit and Run - Cottage Street at Tapawingo Road, SW. April 2, 11:15 p.m. Officers responded to a report of a one car accident where the driver had fled the scene on foot. An officer located the male driver after a witness observed the driver behind a home. The officer arrived on scene and, after his interaction with the driver, determined the driver may have been impaired. After the driver was evaluated and cleared by rescue personnel he was administered a series of field sobriety tests which he failed to successfully complete. The officer arrested the 20-year-old man from West Denali Drive in Nixa, Mo. for Driving While Intoxicated. The man was then transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center where he provided a blood sample for analysis. He was then charged with Driving While Intoxicated and Hit and Run. He was released to the custody of the deputies.

Juvenile Case - Tapawingo Road and Plum Street, SW. April 2, 11:15 p.m. While responding to the report of the Hit and Run accident at Cottage Street and Tapawingo Road, SW (see above) an officer observed juveniles running in the area. He stopped to check their welfare and to determine if they were involved in the accident. The juveniles had not been involved in the accident. They admitted they were running because they had been at a party where they had consumed alcohol and became nervous when they saw the police. One of the juveniles was in possession of a fake identification. The parents of both juveniles were notified and responded to take custody of their children. The juveniles were given verbal counseling by the officer and released to their parents.

Suspicious Event - Amphora Restaurant, 377 Maple Ave., West. April 3 between 1:30 a.m. and 1:47 a.m. Officers responding to a 911 hang up made contact with a citizen who stated he was assaulted by another man at a club in D.C. earlier that night. He stated he then followed that man back to the Amphora Restaurant where he confronted him and advised he was struck again. After speaking with witnesses it was determined that the citizen confronted a man who was out with his ex-girlfriend and an argument ensued, causing that man to shove him. There were no visible signs of injury. The citizen was advised of the warrant process should he wish to seek charges for assault.

Trespassing - Wildwood Park, between Valley Drive and Follin Lane, SE. April 3, 9:42 a.m. Security Officers from Navy Federal Credit Union reported a person camping in the park. Officers located a woman who advised she was homeless. She advised she was familiar with the shelters available in the area, but she refused to allow the officers to transport her to one of them for assistance. The woman was advised she was not permitted to camp in the Town parks. She agreed to gather her belongings and leave the area.

Grand Larceny - Rite Aid, 215 Maple Ave., West. April 3, 8:15 p.m. An employee reported that a black male left the store without paying for a handbasket full of merchandise.

Suspicious Person - Vienna Wolftrap Hotel, 430 Maple Ave., West. April 4 between 11 a.m. and 2:39 p.m. Officers responded to the report of a female guest who was refusing to leave after the hotel’s check out time. Two officers spoke to the woman and assisted her in gathering her belongings. She then left the area without further incident.

Assist Fire/EMS - Chipotle, 213 Maple Ave., East. April 4, 5:31 p.m. Officers responded for the report of an intoxicated male in the restaurant. When they arrived they found the man was unable to stand or walk alone. Officers summoned Fairfax County Rescue. The man was transported to an area hospital for evaluation.

Vehicle Tampering - Maple Avenue Restaurant, 147 Maple Ave., West. April 5 between 11 a.m. and 3:32 p.m. An employee left his moped legally parked in the lot behind the restaurant. When he returned he found that an unknown person dragged the moped to another location in the lot and caused damage to it.

Counterfeiting - Pie Gourmet, 507 Maple Ave., West. April 6, 11 a.m. An employee advised that a black male was in the store and made a purchase using a $20.00 bill that turned out to be counterfeit.

Fraud - Northwest Federal Credit Union, 231 Maple Ave., East, April 6, 12:23 p.m. An employee reported that a black female attempted to cash a fraudulent check. The female left the area before officers arrived.

Counterfeiting - Molly’s Yogurt, 521 Maple Ave., West. April 6, 1:05 p.m.An employee advised that a black male was in the store and made a purchase using a $20 bill that turned out to be counterfeit.

Animal Case - Patrick Street and Patrick Circle, SW. April 6, 6:22 p.m. An officer located a dog that was running at large. After attempts to locate an owner were unsuccessful he transported the dog to the Fairfax County Animal Shelter.

Suspicious Vehicle - Maple Avenue and Follin Lane, SE. April 7, 10:06 p.m. An officer noticed the driver of a vehicle turn onto Follin Lane from Maple Avenue. That portion of Follin is closed for construction and open only to residents living in the immediate area. Officer Herrera initiated a traffic stop. The driver was released on a summons for No Operator’s License.

Crashes

310 Maple Avenue, West. April 2, 10:05 a.m. Vehicle 2 was traveling eastbound in the left lane of Maple Avenue, West. Vehicle 1 was exiting a parking lot to turn left and go westbound on Maple Avenue. As Vehicle 1 entered the roadway it was struck by Vehicle 2. The driver of the Vehicle 2 was transported by Fairfax County Rescue personnel to an area hospital. The driver of Vehicle 1 was issued a summons for Failure to Pay Full Time and Attention.

165 Maple Ave., East. April 2, 12:14 p.m. Three vehicles were traveling eastbound in the left lane on Maple Avenue. The first two vehicles came to a stop for the red traffic light at the intersection of Park Street. The driver of Vehicle-1 did not observe that the first two vehicles stopped and it ran into the rear of Vehicle-2, pushing it into the rear of Vehicle-3. The driver of Vehicle-1 was issued a summons for Failure to Pay Full Time and Attention.

Dominion Road and the W&OD Bike Trail, NE. April 3, 9:52 a.m. Vehicle-1 was pulling into a parking space of a parking lot. The driver thought she hit the brake pedal, but actually hit the gas pedal, causing her vehicle to jump the curb, drive across the W&OD Trail and strike two vehicles that were legally parked. Vehicle-1 then struck a tree causing it and one of the parked vehicles to become pinned. There were no injuries. Vehicle-1 had to be towed.

Maple Avenue at Park Street, NE. April 3, 5:28 p.m. Vehicle-2 was traveling westbound in the left turn lane on Maple Avenue approaching the intersection of Park Street. Vehicle-1 was traveling adjacent to Vehicle-2 in the left thru lane of traffic. Vehicle-1 changed lanes and struck the Vehicle-2. The driver of the Vehicle-1 was issued a summons for Failure to Pay Full Time and Attention.

328 Maple Avenue, East. April 4, 9:20 a.m. Vehicle-2 was a marked police cruiser making a traffic stop on Vehicle-1. Vehicle-1 pulled into a parking lot followed by the cruiser for the traffic stop. The driver of Vehicle-1 exited his vehicle, thinking the car was in “park” however the vehicle was in “neutral” and began rolling backwards striking the police cruiser.

Nutley Street near Tapawingo Road, SW. April 4, 1:40 p.m. Vehicle-1, a box style rental truck, was traveling northbound in the left lane on Nutley Street approaching Tapawingo Road. Vehicle-2 was traveling in the right lane adjacent to Vehicle-1. The driver of Vehicle-1 did not see Vehicle-2 and moved into the right lane forcing Vehicle-2 into the curb. The two vehicles did not collide, however Vehicle-2 was damaged by being forced into the curb.

Maple Avenue at Center Street, NE. April 4, 11:47 a.m. Two vehicles were stopped for the red light in the left westbound thru lane of Maple Avenue at

Center Street. When the light for the left turn lane turned to the green arrow Vehicle-1 mistakenly began to pull into the intersection and Vehicle-2 began to follow. The driver of Vehicle-1 then reversed, striking Vehicle-2. Both drivers pulled over and spoke, but the driver of Vehicle-1 then left the scene without providing information.

West Street at Lawyers Road, NW. April 6, 8:32 a.m. Vehicle-1 was stopped at the stop sign on West Street at Lawyers Road. The driver had not yet decided if she was proceeding straight across the intersection or if she was going to turn right onto Lawyers Road. The driver of Vehicle-1 then proceeded to make a right turn, but failed to notice that Vehicle-2 had pulled up beside her to turn right onto Lawyers. Vehicle-1 struck Vehicle-2 causing minor damage to both vehicles.

Maple Avenue near Park Street, SE. April 6, 11:20 a.m. Vehicle-1 turned right from northbound Park Street to go eastbound on Maple Avenue. The driver then attempted to move into the left lane on Maple to turn left into private property. Vehicle-2 was traveling eastbound on Maple Avenue in the left lane. The driver of Vehicle-1 failed to notice Vehicle-2 and struck him as she changed lanes. The driver of Vehicle-1 was issued a summons for Failure to Yield the Right-of-Way.

Cottage Street and Kingsley Road, SW. April 6, 5:42 p.m. Two vehicles were traveling northbound on Cottage Street. Vehicle-2 stopped at the 4-way stop sign at Kingsley Road. The driver of Vehicle-1 did not realize the first vehicle had come to a stop and ran into the rear of the vehicle, causing minor damage to both vehicles. The driver of the Vehicle-1 was issued two summonses for Failure to Pay Full Time and Attention and No Driver’s License.

Maple Avenue and East Street, NE. April 7, 7:25 a.m. Vehicle-2 was in the left thru lane of westbound Maple at the intersection of East Street, stopped for the red light. Vehicle-1, a large truck, was in the left turn lane when the driver realized he was turning at the wrong intersection. The driver of Vehicle-1 attempted to change lanes, failed to observe Vehicle-2 and struck the driver’s side of that vehicle. The driver of Vehicle-1 was issued a summons for Unsafe Lane Change.
