Alexandria Letter: Praising Treatment of Staff

To the Editor:

As an Old Town resident, it is always enjoyable to walk around during and after a snowstorm. My wife and I had dinner on King Street and a few warm drinks at places that stayed open.

Some restaurant owners and managers expected their staff to drive to and from Old Town for a shift with nearly two feet of snow falling or on the ground and no Metro or DASH service. The places we would rather support took a different approach, paying for hotel rooms for restaurant staff during the storm and its aftermath.

One such place is Murphy's on King Street, which paid for its staff to stay at the walkable Hotel Monaco, something Pat Troy also used to do for Ireland's Own staff.

Kudos to restaurant owners who arrange accommodations for their employees when it's snowing. Perhaps more of the places that choose to stay open during a blizzard will make sure their staff is safe and happy when most of the region gets the week off work.
