Vienna Police Highlights July 24 – July 30, 2020

The following summary contains various incidents of general interest as well as vehicular crashes handled by the Town of Vienna Police Department from July 24 – July 30, 2020.

INCIDENTS

Petit Larceny -- 400 Block Talahi Road, SE Between July 22 at 5:30 p.m. and July 23 at 1:30 p.m. A resident reported that someone rummaged through her unlocked vehicle and stole a plastic sleeve containing her vehicle registration and other documents.

Vehicle Tampering -- 300 Block Orchard Street, NW Between July 22 at 7 p.m. and July 23 at 8 a.m. A resident reported that someone entered her unlocked vehicle and rummaged through it.

Grand Larceny -- 700 Block Talahi Court, SE July 23 between 12:30 a.m. and 9:43 a.m. A resident reported that someone rummaged through her unlocked vehicle and stole credit cards, loose change, and a folder.

Found Property -- 100 Block Tapawingo Road, SE July 23 6:46 a.m. A citizen found a tote bag containing miscellaneous games and toys.

Petit Larceny -- 100 Block Tapawingo Road, SE Between July 23 at 12 p.m. and July 24 at 9 a.m. A resident reported that an unknown person rummaged through three of their vehicles. US currency and an umbrella were stolen from one of the vehicles.

Suspicious Event -- 600 Block Yeonas Drive, SW July 24 3:06 a.m. A resident heard someone outside his house and observed two men looking into his vehicle. When the men began walking toward his wife’s vehicle, the resident turned the porch light on and the men fled toward Ware Street. Officers searched the area but did not locate the men.

Police Service -- 600 Block Ninovan Road, SE July 24, 11:35 a.m. A resident reported that a tree service company working on her neighbor’s yard drove over a storm drain, crushing the concrete. The truck then drove through the resident’s flowerbed. The company was sending a crew to make repairs to the flowerbed and were advised that the Department of Public Works will follow up on the damages to the storm drain.

Police Service -- Vienna Police Station 215 Center Street, South July 24, 4:55 p.m. A resident came to the police station advising an officer that he believed he violated his probation and requested that he be arrested and taken to jail. There were no active warrants for the man and attempts to contact his probation officers were unsuccessful. The officer offered the man other social services, however, he refused.

Petit Larceny -- Giant Food 359 Maple Avenue, East July 24, 5:50 p.m. On July 25, an employee reported that a man stole several bottles of champagne the previous evening.

Burglary -- Tysons Eyebrows 167 Maple Avenue, East, Suite A Between July 24 at 6:15 p.m. and July 25 at 8:45 a.m. An unknown person smashed the front glass door of the business and stole the cash drawer from the sale counter.

Suspicious Event -- Viet Aroma 165 Glyndon Street, SE July 25 11:05 a.m. An employee reported a dispute with a customer.

Juvenile Case -- Glyndon Street, SE July 26, 3:52 p.m. A resident reported issues she is having with her juvenile daughter.

Animal Case -- 900 Block Hillcrest Drive, SW July 26, 6:46 p.m. A resident reported that a stray dog was in her backyard. After attempts to locate the dog’s owner were unsuccessful, the dog was transported to the Fairfax County Animal Shelter.

Police Service -- INOVA Urgent Care 180 Maple Avenue, West July 26, 7:43 p.m. An employee requested assistance with a patient who was having mental health issues. An officer transported the patient to a mental health facility where the staff evaluated her and offered the woman some of their services. The woman refused further treatment and agreed to consult with her physician. The officer transported the woman to her home in Herndon.

Vandalism -- 1100 Block Pekay Street, SW Between July 26 at 10 p.m. and July 27 at 4 p.m. A resident reported that someone drove through her yard and her neighbor’s yard causing damage.

Arrest – Driving While Intoxicated and Accident -- 400 Block Maple Avenue, East July 27, 4:55 a.m. Vehicle-1 was traveling eastbound on Maple Avenue, crossing into the center turn lane. A westbound vehicle also crossed into the center turn lane, causing Driver-1 to swerve into the oncoming traffic lanes, strike the curb, a light pole and several bushes. MPO Shaw located Driver-1, a 17-year-old female, in the parking lot with a male juvenile. Upon the officer’s interaction with the driver, he detected signs of impairment. The driver failed a series of field sobriety tests and was transported to the Vienna Police Station where she provided a sample of her breath for analysis. The juvenile’s father responded to the police station and took custody of his daughter after she was released on a summons charging Driving While Intoxicated.

Arrest – Drunk In Public -- 400 Block Maple Avenue, East July 27, 4:55 a.m. During the accident investigation in Incident above, Ofc. Murray spoke to the male juvenile who was with the female driver. The juvenile stated he was walking home when he observed the accident and stopped to help the driver who was a friend of his. Upon the officer’s interaction with the juvenile, they detected signs of impairment. The juvenile’s mother was notified and responded. The juvenile was released to his mother on a summons charging Drunk In Public.

Fraud -- 200 Block Owaissa Court, SE July 27 1:00 p.m. A resident reported that someone used his credit card account to make an unauthorized purchase.

Petit Larceny -- 900 Block Ware Street, SW July 27, 6:30 p.m. On July 28, a builder reported that his worker observed two men enter a home that his company is working on and walk out with a boxed ceiling fan. When the workers confronted the men, they returned the fan to the home and left the area.

Petit Larceny -- 500 Block Meadow Lane, SW Between July 27 at 8 p.m. and July 28 at 8:08 a.m. A resident reported that someone rummaged through his two unlocked vehicles. The person stole soccer equipment and a wallet. The resident found the soccer equipment on Frederick Street. A neighbor found the wallet and returned it to the resident.

Vehicle Tampering -- 1100 Block Street, SW Between July 27 at 8 p.m. and July 28 at 9:02 p.m. A resident reported that someone rummaged through his unlocked vehicle.

Vehicle Tampering -- 1000 Block Hillcrest Drive, SW Between July 27 at 10 p.m. and July 28 at 9 a.m. A resident reported that someone entered his two unlocked vehicles and rummaged through them. U.S. currency was taken from one of the vehicles.

Stolen Vehicle -- 500 Block Stephen Circle, SW Between July 27 at 10:30 p.m. and July 28 at 8:34 a.m. A resident reported that his vehicle was stolen. The vehicle was parked in the driveway, unlocked with the keys in it. Golf clubs and a range finder were in the vehicle when it was taken. On July 28, the vehicle was recovered in Prince George’s County, Md.

Vehicle Tampering -- 200 Block Battle Street, SW July 28, 3:24 a.m. A resident provided home security video of individuals attempting to enter vehicles.

Suspicious Event -- 200 Block Locust Street, SE July 28, 10:55 a.m. A resident reported that her roommate broke a patio chair. The officer observed that the chair appeared to have broken as a result of wear from being out in the elements and was not a result of vandalism.

Suspicious Event -- CVS 337 Maple Avenue, East July 28, 1:12 p.m. A customer found a baggie containing a substance that appeared to be a narcotic in the bathroom of CVS.

Police Service -- 200 Block Locust Street, SE July 28, 1:35 p.m. Mobile Crisis was requested to assist with on-going issues with the residents in an apartment.

Petit Larceny -- 400 Block Onondio Circle, SE July 28 between 1:45 p.m. and 5 p.m. A resident reported that her mother was on the computer when she received a message stating the computer had been compromised and she needed to purchase gift cards and provide the sender with the security numbers from the cards. After the woman purchased the cards and provided the numbers, she realized it was a scam.

Arrest – Drunk In Public -- Plaka Grill 110 Lawyers Road, NW July 28, 3:05 p.m. An employee reported a man in the restaurant was intoxicated. After leaving the restaurant, the man entered the driver’s side of a vehicle in the parking lot. PFC Williams located the man in his vehicle. Upon the officer’s interaction with the man, he detected signs of impairment. PFC Williams arrested the 29-year-old man with no fixed address. He was transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center and charged with Drunk In Public.

Found Property -- 1100 Block Drake Street, SW July 28, 7:10 p.m. A resident found various credit cards and store cards in his yard.

Arrest – Warrant Service -- Wolftrap Hotel 430 Maple Avenue, West July 28, 10:19 p.m. Officers responded to assist rescue personnel with a man in the parking lot of the hotel. It appeared that someone had given the man Narcan to revive him before rescue personnel arrived. As the man was being transported to an area hospital for treatment, officers found there were active warrants for the man with the Fairfax County and Prince William County Police Departments. Ofc. Farr responded to the hospital with rescue personnel. Once the 26-year-old man from Waterflow Place in Centreville was admitted into the hospital a video conference with a magistrate was set up. The capias from Fairfax County Police for Domestic Assault and a capias from Arlington County Police charging Failure to Appear on Felony Eluding Police were served and the man was turned over to the custody of the Fairfax County Sheriff’s Department.

Natural Death -- 1000 Block Picket Place, SW July ,3:38 a.m. Officers responded to the report that an elderly resident, who suffered from medical conditions, was deceased in her home.

Open Door -- American Legion 330 Center Street, North July 29, 8:49 a.m. Officers responding to the report of an alarm found an open door to the building. Officers searched the premises and found nothing appeared to be out of place.

Burglary -- 100 Block Courthouse Road, SW July 29 between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. A caretaker of two houses reported that an unknown person entered the two homes and stole property.

Lost Property -- 100 Block Church Street, NW July 29, 11:45 a.m. A citizen reported that he left his wallet on a bench outside of Rita’s Italian Ice & Frozen Custard. When he returned, the wallet was gone.

Suspicious Person -- Wolftrap Hotel 430 Maple Avenue, West July 29, 11:04 p.m. Two women had a verbal disagreement in the laundry room when one of the women removed the other’s clean clothes from the washing machine so she could use it.

Petit Larceny -- 100 Block Locust Street, SW July 30 between 5 a.m. and 9 a.m. A resident reported that his Amazon grocery delivery was stolen from the rear of his townhouse.

Animal Case -- Lullaby Lane and Harmony Drive, SE July 30, 9:20 a.m. An officer responding to a report of a sick deer found the animal was in grave condition. The officer euthanized the animal.

Assault -- 200 Block Locust Street, SE July 30, 10:24 p.m. A resident reported that she was assaulted by her roommate. Rescue personnel responded and assessed the resident. There were no signs of injury or assault. The resident was advised of the warrant process should she wish to pursue charges.

CRASHES

300 Block Maple Avenue, East July 21. 9:35 a.m. Two vehicles were traveling westbound on Maple Avenue in the right lane. Vehicle-2 applied his brakes to avoid collision with a vehicle ahead of him, Vehicle-1 was unable to stop in time and ran into the rear of Vehicle-2

Nutley Street and Maple Avenue, SW -- July 23, 10 a.m. Two vehicles were traveling northbound on Nutley Street in the right lane. Vehicle-2 stopped in traffic for the light with Maple Avenue. Vehicle-1 was unable to stop in time and ran into the rear of Vehicle-2.

Nutley Street near Maple Avenue, SW -- July 23, 3:20 p.m. On July 26, Driver-2 (a bicyclist) reported an accident from a few days prior. The bicyclist stated he was traveling northbound on the sidewalk on Nutley Street, passing the parking lot driveway for the Freedom Bank. Vehicle-1 failed to yield to the bicyclist and struck him while exiting the parking lot onto Nutley Street.

Kingsley Road and Nutley Street, SW -- July 23, 4:55 p.m. Vehicle-2 was traveling northbound on Nutley Street. Vehicle-1 was attempting to turn left from Kingsley Road onto southbound Nutley when he impacted with Vehicle-2 and struck two traffic signs.

Maple Avenue near Park Street, SE -- July 26. 3:15 p.m. Two vehicles were traveling eastbound in the right lane of Maple Avenue. Vehicle-2 stopped in traffic. Vehicle-1 ran into the rear of Vehicle-2.

Maple Avenue and Nutley Street, NW -- July 27, 10:38 a.m. Vehicle-2 was traveling southbound on Nutley Street, NW entering the intersection of Maple Avenue with a green traffic signal. Vehicle-1 was traveling westbound on Maple Avenue, proceeded through the red traffic signal at Nutley Street, and struck Vehicle-2. Driver-1 was issued a summons charging Failure to Pay Full Time and Attention.

200 Block Maple Avenue, West -- July 27, 2:53 p.m. Two vehicles were traveling eastbound on Maple Avenue in adjacent lanes. Vehicle-1 attempted to merge from the right lane to the left lane and sideswiped Vehicle-2.

136 Maple Avenue, West -- July 27, 3:56 p.m. Vehicle-2 was legally parked in the parking lot. When the driver returned to the vehicle she found it had been struck by Vehicle-1 (an unknown vehicle). Driver-1 fled the scene without providing their information.

Church Street and Lawyers Road, NW -- July 29, 9:10 a.m. Vehicle-1 (a tractor-trailer) struck a pedestrian crossing sign when it made a U-turn at the intersection. The driver fled the scene.
