It’s Never Too Cold for Ice Cream

Jeni’s ice cream opened its new store on Campbell Street in Shirlington in February in the middle of winter. But Joseph Garcia, who has worked there since the store opened, says business is brisk. It is noon and business is just getting started but he says from 6-7 pm it will be the busiest time of the day.

The favorite flavor of customers so far seems to be gooey butter cake. “It’s my favorite, too.” But he says that kids seem to like best the rainbow buttermilk frozen yogurt with swirls of different colors rippling through the scoops.

Jeni’s has more than 75 scoop shops across the country, and they specialize in making artisan one-of-a-kind flavors using fresh milk from family-run farms and berries grown specially for their ice creams. Merry Berry is a new ice cream flavor made with berries, buttermilk cream, amaretti cookies and raspberry coulis.

Holiday flavors including white chocolate peppermint, boozy eggnog, buckeye frenzy, and the dairy-free rum ball has joined the usual choices at Jeni’s.

Jeni’s was started in Columbus, Ohio in 2002 by James Beard award winner Jeni Britton and is now sold in scoop shops nationwide as well as in local grocery stores and online for nationwide shipping.
