Registration forms for the LCPS Summer in the Arts program will be available at school offices and art, music and drama departments throughout the school system. These programs are available to students currently in grades five through 12.
Summer in the Arts will run from Monday, June 24, through Friday, July 12. Workshops in the performing, literary and visual arts will take place at Harper Park Middle School with the exception of programs for current fifth-graders, a new feature this year.
Workshops for current fifth-graders in drawing, painting, sculpture, band, stringed instruments and chorus will take place at John W. Tolbert Jr. Elementary School.
Transportation to Summer in the Arts will be provided by LCPS.

The cost for the Summer in the Arts is $200 per student with $100 due at registration. A family discount of $50 is available--check the registration form for details. Registration for Summer in the Arts ends June 1 and space is limited.
For the first time, LCPS is offering tuition reductions. Those wishing to apply for them should do so a soon as possible.
Another new feature this year is the splitting of some workshops into advanced and beginner sections. New workshops being offered this year include band, calligraphy, choir, creative writing, journalism, mural painting, music theory and world music drumming.
Other courses being offered include ceramics, class voice, class piano, computer graphic arts, culinary arts, dance, drama, drawing, guitar, jazz band, music theater, photography, sculpture, show choir, video production and watercolor painting.

The 21st Annual Loudoun County Regional Science Fair will be take place Thursday, March 21 at Loudoun Valley High School. More than 200 students from the county's six high schools will attend. Judges are still needed for the fair and will be on duty from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Call 703-779-8886 to volunteer as a judge.
Seneca Ridge Middle School has received a $1,000 grant from Sam's Club to promote literacy. The school will use the funds to purchase materials for English as a second language students. ESL students are among the fastest growing populations at Seneca Ridge. Currently, 60 students who speak 10 different languages and who come from 18 different countries attend the school. In her grant application, reading specialist Pamela Dolgin said that these students, along with their families, would be aided by increasing their proficiency in English. Helping to create the winning grant application were ESL teacher Diane Scott and Sherri Jones, a seventh grade dean.

Students who will attend Forest Grove Elementary in Sterling will register at Sully, Sterling, Guilford, or Rolling Ridge Elementary schools, and students who will attend Hutchison Farm Elementary in South Riding will register at Little River Elementary School. The Growing Stage's summer camp offerings for 2002, begins with Creative Drama Camps for rising kindergartners through third grade, two and three-week theater workshops for grades 3 through 9. The Advisory Board of the Middleburg Library, a branch of the Loudoun County Public Library, is accepting applications for two $400 scholarships. All 2002 high school graduates who will attend a post secondary school in the fall of 2002 and who reside in one of the following zip code areas: 20130, 20131, 20184, 20117, 20118, 20105, 20144, 20140, 20198, 20185 or 20107 are eligible to apply. The money will be used to purchase books at the students' new schools. In addition to the residency requirement, candidates must possess a current Loudoun County library card, complete an application (available at the Middleburg Library) and submit the application by midnight May 1.
