Victim was treated for a gunshot wound.

An 18-year-old man has been charged with malicious wounding following a shooting incident behind the Gum Springs Community Center Monday.

Police from the Mount Vernon District said Sylvester Kelly of no fixed address was charged in the shooting in the 1800 block of Fordson Road in the Hybla Valley area of the county at about 5:10 p.m.

According to police, a 20-year-old Hybla Valley man was standing outside his vehicle when he was hit in the upper body by a bullet that was fired from an unknown location.

The victim was taken to Inova Mount Vernon Hospital where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Police scoured the area talking to witnesses and discovered that Kelly had exchanged words with the victim before the shooting occurred.
