Turkey Trot

<bt>The Herndon Parks and Recreation Department will be holding the annual Herndon Turkey Trot 5K on the Herndon Centennial Golf Course, Saturday, Nov. 23, at 4 p.m.

Turkeys will be awarded to the first-place finisher in each age division, while second-place finishers will receive a pie, courtesy of Mom's Apple Pies. The overall male and female winners will receive complete Thanksgiving dinners with "all the fixin's."

The pre registration cost is $10; and a canned good donation, which will be given to LINK — a Herndon and Sterling organization of 16 churches, which provides food, furniture and financial assistance to needy families. Race day registration is $12 for adults, $10 for youth 18 and under, and a canned good donation.

<sh>FISH Seeking Donations

<bt>The Herndon-Reston FISH (Friendly Instant Sympathetic Help) is collecting money and non-perishable food items for Thanksgiving baskets for needy local families. Each family also receives a $10 gift certificate from a local store to be used to buy a turkey or other fresh foods to compliment the boxes of non-perishable food. Last year FISH gave Thanksgiving baskets to more than 130 families. Non-perishable food donations (such as peanut butter, jams, jellies, tuna, cereals and juices) can be dropped off at United Christian Parish Church at 2222 Colts Neck Road, Reston (across the street from Hunters Wood Shopping Center) or at the Bargain Loft thrift shop located at 336 Victory Drive, Herndon.

The collection and sorting dates are Nov. 17, 18, and 19 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at the United Christian Parish Church. Distribution will be on Nov. 20 from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Anyone wishing to volunteer for this worthwhile activity should call 703-860-8804 or 703-471-9024.

Check donations can be made payable to Herndon-Reston FISH and sent to 336 Victory Drive, Herndon, Va. 20170. FISH is a 50l(c)3 organization so all donations are tax deductible.
