Dan Storck will bring more than a Lincolnesque demeanor to the Fairfax County School Board. He'd be accompanied by his many links to the Mount Vernon community: from Good Shepherd Housing and Family Services to Mt. Vernon-Lee Chamber of Commerce, from Fort Hunt Youth Basketball to Southeast Fairfax Development Corporation. Add into this community-based stew his membership in local PTAs and the Fairfax County Budget Task Force, and voters in the Mt. Vernon District have a champion well grounded in their schools as well as the greater community.
The schools play a significant role in the community; the community plays an equally significant role in its schools. Storck's roots in both will ensure that relationship continues to grow.
More importantly, he will bring careful, measured analysis to the board's broader issues and policies. How effective is the cluster director structure? What administrative, non-school based expenses can be transmuted into class size reductions?
It's a tall order we trust he can fill.
