Arrest Made; Warrant Outstanding

Four men have been arrested and a warrant is outstanding for a fifth man in connection with a gang-related shooting on Sunday, April 4, that left one man dead.

The incident happened about 4:30 a.m., when Christian J. Aranzana-Vasquez of the 6400 block of Pickett Street in the Beacon Hill area, was standing in the parking lot of the Days Inn, located at 6100 Richmond Highway. An argument broke out between several men and one of the men produced a gun and shot Aranzana-Vasquez in the upper body. He was transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Investigation into the incident led to several arrests. A 19-year old Hybla Valley area man was arrested and charged with a parole violation for an armed robbery charge that occurred when he was a juvenile. Richard Benjamin Barker, 21, of 2616 Memorial Street in the Beacon Hill area, was charged with a probation violation on an original charge of possession of cocaine. Wilfredo Guzman, 19, of the Memorial Street address, and Donnie Antonio Barnes, 19, of 7941 Janna Lee Avenue in the Hybla Valley area, were each charged with actively participating with a criminal street gang and willfully participating in a predicate criminal act, namely homicide (Class 4 felony). All four men are being held without bond.

The fifth man wanted in connection with the homicide, Cory J. Wilkins, 22, of 3930 Mariposa Place in the Mount Vernon area (see photo), is wanted of the same charge as Guzman and Barnes. Wilkins is described as black, five feet eleven inches tall and weighing 300 pounds. He has black hair, brown eyes and three-dot tattoos on the web of his left hand and on his wrist. He also had the letters ìC Lî tattooed on his right index finger. Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Wilkins is asked to call police at (703) 691-2131, or Crime Solvers at 1-800-673-2777. The investigation into the incident is continuing.

Man Arrested for Sexual Assault

A 25-year-old man was arrested after he allegedly sexually assaulted a woman and then tried to run over a police officer.

According to police, on Monday, April 19, at approximately 12:30 a.m., officers were called to the Virginia Lodge, l6027 Richmond Highway, for a report of a woman screaming. Upon arrival, officers located a 20-year-old Alexandria area woman who had been assaulted by an acquaintance. The officer was told the suspect, Jose Magana-Herrera of no fixed address, was trying to leave the parking lot. As the officer entered the parking lot, Magana-Herrera drove at the officer at a high rate of speed and the officer jumped out of the way to avoid being run over.

A lookout was given to nearby units and the abandoned white Dodge Neon was located in a nearby parking lot. A few minutes later, Magana-Herrera was arrested at a pay phone near Telegraph Road and Burgundy Road. He was charged with rape, abduction, attempted assault on a police officer, unauthorized use of a vehicle, and reckless driving. He is being held on no bond.

Armed Robbery

Two masked and armed men perpetrated an attack in the 6700 block of West Wakefield Dr., in the Belle View section of Alexandria on Friday, April 9, at 11:15 p.m. One assailant was approximately 5-feet, 10-inches tall 190 lbs., while the other was believed to be about 6-feet tall and 160 lbs. The police were called and the investigation is continuing.
