Habitat for Humanity of Northern Virginia celebrates Building on Faith Week, Sept. 12-19. The Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in McLean will host Rally Day, a day of celebrating common purpose and reviving strength, on Sunday, Sept. 12, at 9:30 a.m. The general public is invited to attend. The day begins a new year of Sunday school with a focus on knowing, growing and showing. The goal of the Sunday school series, titled "Witness," is that each students will know God's word, grow in faith and show in service. The Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in McLean invites the members and the general public to its Faith and Life Forums on Sept. 19, at 9:45 a.m. These one-hour programs feature a speaker followed by discussion relating the topic to living one's Christian faith on a daily basis. The series starts with "Civility and Politics: Extending Grace to Political Opponents" on Sept. 19. Pastor Evans will discuss political discourse and the Vietnam War from one veteran's point of view. On Sept. 26, Redeemer member Elizabeth Scheffler presents the subject of "Homosexuality Among Christians." The first of three programs — not debates, but discussions — aims to reach a common nomenclature. Emphasis will be upon the style and manner of conversation. Discussion references include many sources and the current ELCA study materials.

McLean Presbyterian Church offers tuition-free classes of English as a Second Language to adults on Wednesday mornings 9:30-11:45 a.m. beginning Sept. 22 and on Thursday evenings 7-9 p.m. beginning Sept. 23. Registration for the classes will be Sept. 15, 9:30-11 a.m. and Sept. 16, 7-8:30 p.m. A one-time fee of $15 is required to register. The Rev. Patrick McMahon, O. Carm., directs a Day of Recollection on the Spirituality of St. Theresa of the Child Jesus (Little Flower) and Teresa of Avila on Sept. 12. These women represent two different and strong spiritualities in the Carmelite tradition. McMahon is the director of the Carmelitana Collection, a specialized research library in spirituality of Washington, D.C., and is a professor of spirituality at the Washington Theological Union.
