Artist Donates Creativity to Children

Mural will brighten room for children undergoing care at IMVH.

Inova Mount Vernon Hospital is about to unveil a $800,000 renovation project to the hospital's Emergency Department. Along with new technology, improved security, increased patient privacy measures and features to promote efficiency in care, there's a little something extra for any family who ever needs to come through the doors.

Anne Jacob, a local artist, donated her time to create a children's mural for the new pediatric treatment room in the Emergency Department. With the theme "Under the Sea" in mind, Jacob took the blank wall and created an underwater wonderland. The dolphins and bright fishes are a way to make children feel more at ease as they receive care at Inova Mount Vernon Hospital.

"As a parent of a child with a medical condition, I have found myself sitting in the Emergency Department many times," Jacob said. "I know it can sometimes be a scary environment, and I wanted to do something to make the experience more pleasant for the children and their parents."

IT TOOK JACOB three days to create the mural, which fills the space of an entire eight-foot wall. Eric Busch, a George Mason University student, donated his time to help Jacob with the project. Jacob began painting in 1984, and has created murals for the Prince George's County Library, the Georgetown Presbyterian Church, and the McLean Bible Church.
