Franconia Resident Dies In Fire

A fire in the kitchen of a single-family home at 5211 York Road in the Franconia area of Fairfax County resulted in the death of Mildred Renner, 91, at approximately 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, according to Fairfax County Fire & Rescue Department Public Information Officer Daniel L. Schmidt.

"She was apparently cooking when her clothing caught on fire. A neighbor called 911 when smoke was spotted coming from the home," Schmidt said.

When firefighters arrived smoke was coming from the eaves of the one-story home, according to the Department. The one-alarm fire was brought under control in approximately 10 minutes. Fire investigators determined the cause to be accidental. Damage was estimated at $100,000.

During the customary search after extinguishing the fire, firefighters found Renner's body in the kitchen. Following an autopsy, completed Monday, it was determined she had died of severe burns, according to Schmidt.

One firefighter was transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital for non-life threatening injuries, according to Schmidt. He was later released.
