<sh>Runnymede Clean-up Rescheduled

<bt>The annual Runnymede Park and Sugarland Run cleanup has been rescheduled for Saturday, March 31, after a wintry mix of sleet and rain forced a cancellation of its original March 17 date.

The 21st annual community cleanup project is scheduled to start at the Hunters Creek Clubhouse at the corner of Herndon Parkway and Queens Row Street from 8 a.m. to noon. The volunteer cleanup project is sponsored by the Friends of Runnymede Park and the Town of Herndon's Parks and Recreation Department.

All volunteers are invited to take part in the clean-up project, according to a Town of Herndon press release. Anyone hoping to join in the cleanup should wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts, as well as gloves and old boots. Garbage bags, maps and "cleanup team guides" will be provided by the town.

<sh>Kaine Talks Transportation

<bt>Gov. Tim Kaine (D) is scheduled to speak at a special transportation presentation at the Westfields Marriott Hotel Thursday morning, according to a press release from the Dulles Regional Chamber of Commerce, which is sponsoring the event.

Kaine is scheduled to speak about the recently-approved Virginia house bill 3202, which he "has concerns about," according to the press release. The bill addresses the selection process of certain transportation board members, road classifications and automated toll requirements.

The presentation will take place from 7:30 a.m. until 9:30 a.m., with Kaine first delivering his speech at 8:30 a.m. and fielding a 30-minute question and answer session from the crowd starting at 9 a.m. DRCC members are required to register in advance on-line at www.dullesregionalchamber.org/events/index.html or at 571-323-5304.

<sh>Council Requests CIP Input

<bt>The Town of Herndon's Planning Commission is requesting citizen input for the town's Capital Improvement Program, a listing of town construction and maintenance priorities, for the 2007-2008 budget, which will be reviewed by the council this May.

Herndon residents are encouraged to attend the Planning Commission's scheduled work session addressing the CIP which will be held at 7 p.m. on March 26, before commenting at a public hearing scheduled for 7 p.m. on April 2. All comments will be reviewed by the Town Council during the budget drafting process.

The town holds a six-year CIP for town physical construction, maintenance and asset purchases. Some of the items currently scheduled include various road improvements, a skateboard facility, upgrades to town vehicle and park enhancements.

<sh>Student in State Geography Competition

<bt>Nick Moutafakis, a Rachel Carson Middle School seventh-grader, has been chosen by the National Geographic Society as a state semifinalist to compete in the 2007 Virginia Geographic Bee, according to a press release from the school.

Moutafakis started the pathway to the state competition by winning his school's geographic bee. He was then invited to take a qualifying test which he submitted to the National Geographic Society, which got him his entrance into the competition, as he was listed as one of the top 100 scores in the state.

The competition will be held at Old Dominion University in Norfolk on March 30. The state winner will represent Virginia at the national finals in Washington D.C. in May, where the qualifying students will compete for a $25,000 college scholarship.
