Cia Makrigiorgos Honored in River of Words

Wolftrap Elementary language arts teacher Ellen Collins with Cia Makrigiorgos on May 12 at the Library of Congress.

Cia Makrigiorgos, a sixth-grade student at Wolftrap Elementary School in Vienna, was one of the 60 winners in the poetry division in the 13th annual Library of Congress Center for the Book, River of Words contest. The theme is watersheds and the contest is designed to help youth explore the natural and cultural history of the place they live, and to express, through poetry and art, what they discover. The ceremony was emceed by Robert Hass, River of Words co-founder, former U.S. Poet Laureate, and recent winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award for Poetry. The ceremony featured children from all over the country reading their winning poems about the natural world. Cia’s extended family owns The Greek Grill on Maple Street in Vienna.
