Outlook: With an young and inexperienced group, South County head coach Barbara Mahony is doing anything to get her girls playing time – including starting a South County Secondary School Tournament, which will match the Stallions up with six teams in two days.

“I have so many kids that just don’t have varsity experience, but they are quick learners,” said Mahony. “They get better and get used to the speed that we move with. They just have to learn to pick up the pace.”

The Stallions feature six seniors this year, backed up by two juniors, five sophomores and four freshman.

“They are good athletes and they have all the basics, they just have to learn to move to the next level,” said Mahony.

Sophomores Megan Wears and Sally Jefferson will look to have breakout years, with Wears scoring 10 goals in the Stallions’ first two scrimmages of the year.

“She is getting ready to burst onto the scene,” said Mahony of Wears.

Jefferson will split time with senior goalie Ashland Husar.

“They each work well in different situations, which couldn’t be anymore perfect,” said Mahoney. [Sally] is a very willing learner and Ashland is a great teacher.

In their first two years as a program, the Stallions have finished right in the middle of the pack of the Patriot District. This year, Mahony hopes that they can take that extra step.

“I honestly think that we will be peaking at the end of the season. The way that our schedule works out, that is great,” she said. “I really just want to keep chipping away at the other guys.”
