Getting Their Feet Wet

Seahawks’ baseball gets some games under its belt.

The South Lakes High baseball team spent spring break competing at the `Let’s Play Two Invitational,’ co-hosted by Osbourn Park (Manassas) and Woodbridge High Schools.

The Seahawks went 1-3 overall at the 12-team tournament. Their win came over McKinley Tech, 17-2, in their second game of the week. The losses came to Osbourn Park, 13-7, in the tourney opener, as well as Jefferson High (Alexandria) and Mount Vernon.

South Lakes coach Galvin Morris said the most important aspect in competing at the tournament was for his team to get live game action in preparation for the upcoming Liberty District schedule.

"Being as early as it is [in the season], we treated it like a pre-season tournament," said Morris. "We wanted to see how some people would play. We saw some good things and we saw some bad things. Overall, it was just good to get out and play."

Poor weather had prevented South Lakes from getting game action in prior to the spring break tournament. Morris said it was good for his squad to finally play a few games.

"At times, it showed, yes," said Morris, of the rustiness his team displayed. "At the beginning of the tournament, the hitting was a little further than the pitching. It was time on the field that we needed. Nothing can simulate game speed in practice.

There were things we needed to work on."

In the game against McKinley Tech, Morris said the Seahawks defeated a team that is not highly competitive.

"It was one of those games where we beat them, but didn’t get anything out of it," he said. "It wasn’t a very good team."

Morris said it was a well run tournament. Teams received hotdogs and a drink after games. Also, players received tournament t-shirts and coupons to Glory Days Restaurant, and each team received six new baseballs.

"The tournament was outstanding," said Morris. "It was one of the best I’ve been to in a while. It was all about the kids. I thought the tournament, hospitality wise, was outstanding."

South Lakes was scheduled to play on Wednesday night of this week against local opponent Herndon. The game is scheduled for 6:30 at South Lakes.
