On Sat., Nov. 3, Russell C. Libby, M.D., FAAP was installed as president of the Medical Society of Virginia (MSV) during the organization’s annual meeting at the Williamsburg Lodge in Williamsburg.

Dr. Libby is a founder and president of Virginia Pediatric Group, Ltd, a primary care pediatric practice with offices in Fairfax, Herndon and Great Falls. He also serves as president of Health Connect IPA, an independent practice association, and chief of the general medicine section of Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children. He has been a MSV member since 1984, and in that time, he has led multiple task forces and committees including medical economics, communications and tort reform committees and has served as an advisor to the executive committee, president-elect, vice president, third vice president and board member.

During his term as MSV president, Dr. Libby hopes to guide MSV to help physicians build a better health care system during a time of change, in order to support its mission that Virginia is the best place to practice medicine and receive care. “Nobody should be more in tune with all the changes that are currently occurring than physicians. Health care is waiting for someone to take charge and physicians should be the ones to take on that challenge.”

Dr. Libby also represents Virginia physicians as a delegate to the American Medical Association and has served as president of the Fairfax County Medical Society and president of the Medical Society of Northern Virginia Foundation. He has served in positions of leadership at the American Academy of Pediatrics, where he has contributed to a number of policy statements and publications pertaining to child health financing, home care and immunization.

Dr. Libby received his undergraduate and medical degrees from George Washington University and his post graduate training included an internship and residency at Georgetown University Hospital. He is a clinical instructor in pediatrics at Georgetown University Medical School and assistant clinical professor of pediatrics at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine. He is also co-founder of American Pediatric Consultants, Inc., a full range pediatric home care services company and chairman of the board of National Physician Care, Inc., providing support services to physicians’ practices.

For nearly 20 years, he has been recognized as the best pediatrician in the Washington metropolitan area by Families Magazine, in the list of best physicians by Washington Consumer Checkbook, as a Top Doctor by Washingtonian Magazine and as one of the 100 top physicians in the Washington metropolitan area by Northern Virginia Magazine.
