MVCCA Reveals 2013 Award Winners

The Mount Vernon Council of Citizens' Associations (MVCCA), announced the recipients of its 2013 Citizen of the Year, Organization of the Year, and Student of the Year awards this week. This year, there are two recipients for each award category:

Citizen of the Year: Becky and Jeff (posthumously) Todd have been stars in the Mount Vernon community for more than 30 years. Prior to Jeff Todd’s death, together they championed those in need and local athletic teams and helped Richmond Highway to revitalize and grow. Since the death of her husband, Becky Todd has continued to carry on the work they started.

Organization of the Year: Mount Vernon-Lee Chamber of Commerce (MVLCC) and the Southeast Fairfax Development Corporation (SFDC). Both the SFDC and MVLCC, are under the directorship of volunteer boards of directors. Collectively, they have been champions for the revitalization of the Richmond Highway Corridor. Their efforts have been helping to improve the corridor.

Student of the Year: Reemal Zaheer (Mount Vernon High School) and Brittan Robinson (South County High School). Both students have strived to make life better in their school and neighborhood communities.

As a member of Future Educators Association, Reemal Saheer teaches a group of students ages 5-13 and, in so doing, has realized that her positive attitude can make a difference. Evenings and weekends, she volunteers at her mosque.

Brittan Robinson founded a group at South County called “Stallions for Servicemen,” an organization which solicits donations for and distributes care packages as well as providing travel toiletries and other similar items for troops traveling through the area.

These awardees will be recognized at the MVCCA Gala being held on April 27 at the Fort Belvoir Golf Club from 6-9 p.m. Tickets are $55 per person. Reservation information and forms may be downloaded from the MVCCA website: www.mvcca.org. Hardcopy reservation forms will be available at Supervisor Gerry Hyland’s office and the Lorton, Martha Washington and Sherwood Hall libraries.
