Backpacks Needed Friday, Aug. 16

Dozens of children still need to be “adopted” for the Lorton Community Action Center (LCAC) 2013 Back-2-School Outreach. Donation drop off is this Friday, Aug. 16 at the Moose Family Center, 9612 Fernedge Lane, Lorton (just off of Rte. 1) between 10 a.m. and noon. Clifton Road Closed on Saturday

As part of ongoing maintenance on the Norfolk-Southern rail line that runs through Clifton, the Clifton Road will be closed from 6 a.m. through 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17.

While thru traffic will be prohibited in town, there will be a detour in place. Pedestrian traffic will be accessible across the tracks, however pedestrians will have to walk around the work site and will not have the use of the paved walkway.

American Red Cross Blood Drives for August

The American Red Cross Greater Chesapeake and Potomac Blood Services Region will hold blood drives in cities and towns throughout the region. Donors are encouraged to give all summer long, but especially near key summer holidays when donations decline. From May 23 to Sept. 13, donors, recipients and blood drive coordinators will be asked to share their inspirational videos and personal messages about how their lives have been touched by blood donation.   • Aug. 21, 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m. at Noman M. Cole Jr. Pollution Control Plant, 9399 Richmond Highway, Lorton.
