Letter: Right Choice In 45th District

Letter to the Editor

To the Editor:

We are writing in strong support of Clarence Tong's candidacy for state delegate in the 45th District. Clarence is by far the most qualified candidate for this position based on his education, experience and community involvement. His educational choices reflect his desire for a life of effective public service. He studied and was trained in economics and public policy at the University of Pennsylvania, London School of Economics, Harvard Kennedy School, and University of Virginia's Institute for Political Leadership. Clarence brings over 10 years of experience in politics, advocacy and government service. This includes four years in Congressional affairs at the U.S. Dept. of Energy including two years as a Presidential appointee

and as the lead appropriations liaison for the department. He also served on Capitol Hill as communications and policy director for Congressman Joe Sestak (D-PA). He currently works as a legislative advocate at the Environmental Defense Fund and was appointed by Governor McAuliffe as a citizen member of the Virginia Coal and Energy Commission. Also very active in our community, Clarence has served as chair of the Alexandria Democratic Committee and as an Alexandria representative on the 8th District Democratic Committee. Clarence and his wife Alice own a home in North Old Town and he serves on the North Old Town Independent Citizens Association board where he is currently using his environmental expertise to help with the clean-up of the GenOn power plant.

We need a representative in Richmond with the necessary education and legislative experience; someone who can work effectively with people and who has concerns that mirror those of the constituents. Clarence will work to expand Medicaid, provide educational opportunities — including early childhood education, protect women's health, stand for equality, push for job creation through clean energy alternatives, and serve as an outstanding advocate for environmental issues.

We urge you to join us in voting in the June 9 Democratic Primary for Clarence Tong.
