Falls Church's Longfellow Model UN Club Wins Best Middle School Award

Longfellow Middle’s Model United Nations (MUN) club earned the Best Middle School award at a regional conference hosted by Gar-Field High School in Woodbridge. The 55 Longfellow delegates were challenged by issues such as preventing child marriage and trafficking in the UNICEF committee, combatting oceanic pollution in the United Nations Environmental Programme and, in a special committee centered on Teen Titans, alien invasion. Individual awards that went to Longfellow students included: in the UNEP committee, Peter Awabdeh and Jonghwa Kim earned a verbal commendation representing Turkey; Samir Chowdhury and James Hoadley earned a verbal commendation representing Saudi Arabia; Sabrina Kianni and Chelsea Park earned an Honorable Mention representing Mexico; Ella David and Michelle Cheng earned an Honorable Mention representing the Czech Republic; and Amre Proman and Ava Dettleff achieved the highest honor of Best Delegate for their representation of the United States. In the UNICEF committee, Jack Overdeck earned verbal commendation representing Norway; Daniel Mena and Sherif El-Behiry earned an Honorable Mention representing Turkey; Daniel Kalish and Joseph Gonsalves earned the Outstanding Delegate award representing Pakistan; Kyla Duggal and Clara Bradley achieved the highest honor of Best Delegate for their representation of the United Kingdom. In the Teen Titans committee, Maria Dubasov earned verbal commendation as Robin; Alexander Matheson earned verbal commendation as Cyborg; and Chanyoo Lee earned the Honorable Mention as Kid Flash.
