A fatal collision involving a construction worker occurred last night in North Bethesda.
On Monday, June 1, at approximately 6:28 p.m., 2nd District officers and Fire & Rescue personnel responded to Old Georgetown Road at Executive Boulevard for the report of a collision.
Preliminary investigation by detectives revealed that a 2009 Hyundai Elantra was traveling south on Old Georgetown Road. A 2009 Chevrolet Colorado was traveling east on Executive Boulevard. For reasons still under investigation, the two vehicles collided in the intersection. The impact of the collision then caused both vehicles to travel into a construction zone at the southeast corner of the intersection. The Hyundai struck a stationary excavator. The Chevrolet struck a construction worker who was working in a trench in lane two of northbound Old Georgetown Road.
The construction worker, identified as 61-year-old Michael James O’Connor, of Middle River, Maryland, was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The driver of the Hyundai, identified as Elizabeth McMillan Stuckle, age 69, of Bethesda, Maryland, was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the Chevrolet, David Walter Fenerty, age 56, of Kensington, Maryland, was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
