Harold Hill, traveling salesman turned con man, has always been
successful.
When he reaches River City, Iowa, things go according to plan. Step one, convince the town that sin and depravity are infecting their young people.
Step two, fast-talk the parents of River City into believing that the only cure for their troubles is a boys band.
Step three, collect money for instruments and uniforms.
Step four, get out of town.
The entire population of River City is bamboozled by the smooth "music professor" except for the beautiful, intelligent, and independent librarian Marian Paroo. Marian sees right through "Professor" Hill's tricks but when it comes to exposing him for the fraud he is, she realizes that not only has he stolen the town's money, he has also stolen her heart.
