15 Years of Commitment to Children

Stop Child Abuse Now (SCAN) of Northern Virginia celebrated 15 years of serving children, parents and the community with a fund-raiser event in Alexandria in October.

Founder Dave Cleary was recognized for his continued commitment to children and families through his support and leadership of SCAN.

Fifteen years ago, Cleary, a local business owner, was concerned about the growing incidence of child abuse and neglect in Northern Virginia. He created a non-profit organization called Stop Child Abuse Now of Northern Virginia to focus on the prevention of abuse and neglect as well as to educate the community about the issue.

"I would never have imagined the impact SCAN would have on our community," said Cleary. "In 15 years we have been able to strengthen Northern Virginia, protecting children and helping parents every step of the way."

Since 1988, SCAN has grown into a successful community organization playing a key role in the prevention of child abuse and neglect in Northern Virginia. SCAN reaches thousands of children, parents and community members every year through education, outreach and advocacy. SCAN's Parent Education Program touches hundreds of families every year through parenting classes, parent support groups and a variety of parenting workshops.
