Chantilly Academy Students are STARs

Students who attend The Chantilly Academy competed in the FCCLA STAR Events district level competitions at Herndon High School on Saturday, Jan. 20.

Five students from the Early Childhood Careers Classes competed in the Early Childhood Education and Services Category.

* Karen Mattern received gold recognition for her development of five learning activities around a central theme.

* Yuri Munive received silver recognition for her project on cultural differences in which she created a game, visual display and a bibliography of cultural diverse books for preschoolers.

* Sara Brickman received silver recognition for her compilation of developmental goals/guidelines for children. She demonstrated each goal through pictures, and created a process for communicating developmental issues with parents, and a checklist for evaluating children in meeting these goals.

* Rebecca Hall received silver recognition for her development of four activities to teach preschoolers about healthy meals and snacks.

* Nikki Matthews received silver recognition for her creation of a preschool program newsletter. She included schedules, theme units, home activities that parent's can use to reinforce the theme, and child development information.

FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) is a national career and technical student organization. Today, more than 250,000 members in nearly 7,000 chapters are active in a network of associations across the U.S.

The philosophy of the FCCLA Star Events competition is to recognize members for proficiency and achievement in chapter and individual projects, leadership skills and occupational preparation.

All five students qualify to compete in the state competition at the Virginia Beach Convention Center April 27-29.
