Police Investigate Accidental Workplace Death

Police were called to a business in the 4100 block of Lafayette Center Drive in Chantilly on Sunday, May 6 shortly before 3 p.m. for the report of an accident involving a forklift operator.

During the initial investigation, officers and detectives determined that Gerardo Santiago Paulette Ruiz, 47, of Herndon was operating a forklift in the warehouse area of the business. He apparently attempted to pass through a doorway when the forklift struck an overhead beam. The beam became dislodged and fell on Ruiz. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Town of Herndon Unofficial Election Results

Lisa C. Merkel has been elected Mayor of the Town of Herndon for the 2012-2014 term. Merkel currently serves as Vice Mayor on the 2010-2012 Town Council.

The six Town Councilmembers elected for the 2012-2014 term are Connie Haines Hutchinson, C. Melissa Jonas, David A. Kirby, Sheila A. Olem, Charlie D. Waddell and Grace Han Wolf. Hutchinson, Olem and Wolf currently serve on the 2010-2012 Town Council; Kirby and Waddell have served on past councils.

Election results become official upon certification by the Fairfax County Electoral Board, which administers elections for the Town of Herndon.

The 2012-2014 Mayor and Town Council will assume office on July 1. All citizens are invited to a swearing-in ceremony for the new officials; details will be provided as they become available.
