— World War II veteran Viola R. Rice stood in front of the fifth grade class and spoke about her time in the Navy Waves during WWII. At the end of her junior year in college, Rice took a course in Morse code and upon completion was encouraged to sign-up and teach the course for the Navy. Rice was joined by a few dozen veterans at the annual Take a Veteran to School Day at Fort Belvoir Elementary School.

This year’s event was co-hosted by The History Channel, Cox Communications and the Department of Veterans Affairs. At the conclusion of the classroom visits, a luncheon reception was held in the school library after which members of the Mount Vernon-Lee Chamber of Commerce, Fairfax County School Board representative Dan Storck, and members of the Fort Belvoir community signed the Army Community Covenant.
