The Washington, D.C. area's furniture design and manufacturing company, Willem Smith, located for the last seven years in the Washington Design Center, has now come to Merrifield. The showroom is open to both the public and the trade, and features the work of owners and Great Falls residents John and Mary Smith. The couple and design team hosted a private opening party in their Merrifield showroom on Saturday, June 8, for friends and family, many of whom came from Great Falls for the event.

An opening for the design community is upcoming. John Smith says that, after years of developing, refining and editing their collection in Washington, selling directly to furniture lovers is a big step forward. The Smiths believe they are well positioned to sell to customers who are predisposed to appreciate the merits of their pieces. For Mr. and Mrs. Smith, furniture is as much art as it is breadwinner. This is because, as the designers and manufacturers, not simply resellers, the Smiths are the party responsible for the scale, sit-it-to-believe-it comfort, leather, wood, performance fabric and hardware they are selling. John said that though they may not wow customers with merchandising or literature, they've done their homework on the furniture's quality and composition. The showroom/warehouse is open Monday to Saturday as well as, by appointment, evenings and Sundays. Take a look in at 2809-I Merrilee Drive, Fairfax.
